Big Turnout for Winter Sprints

Great to see so many youngsailors out on the water for the Auckland Junior Winter Sprint Series on Saturday 27th June.We were spoilt with a lovely on-shore breeze and largely missed the rain. Racing was a good length for winter, off the water by 3.30pm and lots of hot pasta, home baking and hot drinks after. Fantastic to have the Aon Youth sailors on the water with us. Likewise the RNZYS race fleet in full flight.Well done everyone and a big thanks to all the volunteers. See you all ba...

Picnic Report

The weather gods and the tide all helped with another successful Wakatere Club Picnic last Sunday - a flotilla sail to McKenzie Bay on Rangitoto for fun and games and a walk to the summit. The picnic has been a longstanding highlight since the club's foundation in 1926 and we think it's still relevant and a fantastic reminder of why we love sailing. Participation is as important as racing and it was great to see kids having fun together and just being in their boats.Adults mixed and mingled from ...

George Gair RIP

Sadly the Honourable George Gair passed away on Monday 17th August 2015. He obviously loved Wakatere and what it represented to the community. Through local politics he was instrumental in moving Old Lake Rd behind the club house for which we are forever grateful.  In more rece...

With two talented young sailors in the family rising through the ranks, she travelled the country flying the Wakatere flag at regattas throughout New Zealand.   She was involved in most areas of the Club at some time or another and her Life Membership was ...

King of the Frostbite

Long time Club member Bob Gillies passed away on February 15th, aged 86.  Bob sailed his Frostbite well into his 70's and was "the King of the Frostbite in his day".  He was also a great supporter of the club - taking an interest in how the young sailors were developing, and taking some under his wing. He enjoyed many of the official and social functions, and loved to have a yarn about his yachting exploits over a beer in the evening with friends. In 2013 Bob's contribution to the club...
