Club Champs Close the Season

It was brilliant to see 70+ boats sailing in the Wakatere Club Champs from 1st to 2nd May 2021. Two afternoons of racing with a social event on Saturday after sailing and the Club Champs prizegiving on Sunday. All in all, a big weekend for the club.

We tried something different with the courses over the weekend to cater to different fleets and from the feedback, everyone seemed very happy.

The racing on Saturday was very tricky with light breezes and a strong outgoing tide. We were pleased to get x2 races on the W/L course and x1 on the outer loop. Race Officer Guy Pilkington commented that he thought all the on-water volunteers did an amazing job, especially on Sunday with marks drifting down the course and getting relayed more than once!

Sunday turned out to be a fabulous day on both courses with the strong outgoing tide still a factor. Unfortunately, there wasn't quite enough breeze for the windfoilers to join the rest of us afloat, squeezing in a few races on sunset.

Congratulations to all the prizewinners and thanks to our volunteers and supporters over the weekend.

Thanks to Kirsten Newton and the Wakatere Fun Committee for organizing the events ashore after sailing.
We had a fantastic turnout on Saturday evening, kicking off with Waka mulled wine to warm the heart of any sailor. And with the fabulous contributions from members, we all enjoyed a hearty meal. Kids are never too old to get a thrill out of a free Mr Whippy option!

The weekend of racing marked the end of the club's program and a crazy Covid season we won't forget. Bring on 2021/2022!
