The Sunday Programme at Wakatere is traditionally for the Optimist group although we have extended this to include Feva sailors and Windsurfers with Class Reps managing their respective groups. It's a busy time slot at the club!
Here we outline the Sunday Optimist Programme as this is the next step after our Learn to Sail course and entry level to club coaching and sailing.
The Sunday Optimist Programme commences late September and runs through to end of April with a break for Christmas. You must have your own Optimist dinghy & sailing gear, including an approved personal flotation device. A wetsuit and thermals are recommended pre-Christmas. Children are graded at entry to the programme into one of three groups being:-
1. Confidence One (parent coaches)
2. Confidence Two (parent coaches)
3. Learn to Race (YNZ qualified coach)
Sailors new to Wakatere or those that have just completed their LTS Course will always start in C1 (Confidence One).
The club provides a volunteer coordinator for this programme and the C1 and C2 groups are supported by a pool of experienced club members who act as coaches. One child's parent or caregiver is required to attend each session and support the programme ashore or afloat - it's easy and fun. The Sunday Learn to Race Group has a qualified coach but equally relies on parent support in patrol boats. Parents should come dressed to get wet to assist with launching/retrieving or as patrol boat support.
Confidence groups are expected to be at the club on Sunday mornings by 8.30am to rig so that they are ready for briefing and coaching to commence at 8:50am. Sailors are back ashore by 10:30 for de-briefing in the clubhouse and to wash down their boats.
Learn to Race group are expected to be at the club by 9:30am for a 10:00am briefing and encouraged to continue with club racing in the afternoon.
As a parent led programme, the Club policy of enrolment requirements will be adhered to:
