2004 Sunburst Nationals, Eastbourne Easter 2004
Seven Wakatere boats headed south to Muritai Y.C., Eastbourne for the Harcourt 2004 Sunburst Nationals.
The team - Quentin and Sam Reeves, James Corbett and Claire Allen, John and Danny White, Mike and Nathan Long, Garth Ellingham and Mike Snow-Hansen, Malcolm, George or Alison Tubby and Bruce and Luke Yarnton.
A fleet of 55 boats took part in the seven race series. Conditions varied from a solid 25 knot cold southerly to a gentle 5-8 knot northerly. The Wakatere fleet were definitely more comfortable in the lighter breezes with Malcolm (and eight year Alison) winning race 6 in Rose Ann. Best overall placing went to Garth Ellingham and Mike Snow-Hansen in 6th place sailing in Zytz (loaned by Stefan Goldwater for the competition and currently for sale).
With racing abandoned on Saturday afternoon the team headed for the local go-kart track for a spot of friendly racing. Again Mike and Garth proved to be the quickest on the course.
John and Danny White sailing Elan finished 2nd overall on handicap. Last years winner Brett Linton finished 5th. This year's overall winner was Greg Wright with Penny Kerr as crew.

2004 Optimist Nationals, Worser Bay Easter 2004
The Optimists held their Nationals on the other side of Wellington Harbour in Worser Bay. The weather earlier in the week suggested a cold windy Nationals but other than for a couple of races, the winds were light to moderate and not particularly cold. The scheduled 15 races were run, the first time this has ever been managed.
Five Wakatere sailors competed with the best result coming from Paul Snow-Hansen who had a great battle with Daniel Willcox and Carl Evans, eventually finishing a close 3rd. This was good enough to secure a place in the team to the Worlds in Ecuador in July.
The other Wakatere sailors, Matthew Knox, Chris Kelly, Finn Drummond and Andrew McQueen all had a good race or two, especially towards the end of the series.

2004 Dirty Dog Regatta & Auckland Champs, Eastern Beach 27 - 28 March 2004
The combined Dirty Dog Regatta and Auckland Champs was an impressive affair - 108 Green Fleet Optimists, 99 Open fleet, 40 odd Starlings, 30 P Classes, 14 3.7s, 8 Sunbursts and 11 420s.
There was a good turn out of Wakatere Green Fleet Optimists with the best performance from Chris Steele who finished 11th (from memory). Well done to all those who attended - Chris, Matthew McQueen, Alice Hawkins, George Grieve, Luke Yarnton, Tim Wilde, Lucy Hawkins, Isobel Hawkins, Sophie Lauder, Emily Tubby, George Tubby, Elizabeth Whitehead - sailing in a fleet of over 100 for your first regatta is quite an experience.
Paul Snow-Hansen finished 3rd in the Open Fleet on Saturday and moved into 2nd overall in the Auckland Champs on the back of two strong performances in Sunday's heavy conditions (averaging over 20 knots with gusts about 30). Matthew Knox also had one of his better days with a 9th and almost another top 10 placing until he capsized.
Matthew McQueen was the only Wakatere Green Fleeter who stayed on for the second day and was rewarded with an 8th in one of the races.
James Corbett won the Sunbursts on count back from Garth Ellingham and Mike Snow-Hansen.
Kate Ellingham convincingly won the P Classes but was disqualified for changing sails during the contest.
Jake Lawrence sailed his Starling well in the heavy races with placings of 7th, 6th and 3rd to show that he is coming to grips with his new boat.

Kate Ellingham also performed well finishing 4th and 1st girl in the P Classes, following on from her win in the Auckland Anniversary Regatta at the same venue two weeks previous.
It was also good to see Edward and Sam Reeves attending their first regatta and competing in the Opti Green Fleet. It would be good to see more Wakatere green fleeters joining them.

P Nationals (Tauranga Cup)
4 January 2004
The wind for the last race of the series was light and for once favoured the boats on the right side of the course. This saw many of the front runners having one of their worst races of the series. Kates previous consistency meant that she could count her 10th place in race 7 and slipped only one place to 6th overall. Paul was the second best Wakatere sailor with his 2nd place securing him 15th overall. Wakatere results are:

Tanner Cup
30 December 2003
Kate saved her best race for last, finishing 2nd in a blanket finish with two other boats. This was good enough to give Kate a highly commendable 5th placing overall. Final placings:

2 Thomas Olds,

3 Josh Junior

4 Grace Nixon,

5 Kate

6 Peter Burling,
BOP 25 pts
29 December 2003
Riley Deans of Canterbury on 6 pts leads the Tanner Cup going into the last day of competition. Second is Thomas Olds of South Canterbury on 9 points, however dropping the worst performance leaves these two on equal points well clear of the rest of the fleet. Racing on the second day was held in 15 knot southerlies with three races back to back.
Kate is currently 6th on 23 points behind Josh Junior (Wellington) on 17 pts and Peter Burling (BOP) and Grace Nixon (Auckland) on 22 points. There are two more races scheduled for the final day.
28 December 2003
The first day of the Tanner Cup started with a brisk westerly for the invitation race. The wind gradually died and finished at about 5 knots. Paul Snow-Hansen led for most of the race hoping to repeat his victory of last year but headed fo the wrong mark on the last leg and finished 2nd. Kate Ellingham sailed well to move through the fleet to fourth.
As soon as the practice race finished, the wind shifted to the east and increased to 25 knots for the start of the first race in the Tanner Cup. Kate struggled a little at the beginning but settled down to finish 5th overall. For full results, click on http://www.cya.org.nz/pclass.htm
Season Points 14 December 2003

NI Opti Champs, Rotorua 22 - 23 November 2003
Paul Snow-Hansen is the new NI Optimist Champs, following on from his brother Mike who won at the same venue two years ago. Paul had a titanic battle with World's team mate Daniel Willcox going into the last race only one point apart. Unfortunately the dog fight we'd all hoped to see fizzled out when Dan was over the line at the start and never recovered to finish back in the fleet. Conditions were extremely difficult with winds ranging from light to moderate/heavy with large shifts and wind lines. Paul managed these conditions really well, never finishing further back than 9th.
The other great news from a Wakatere perspective was the performance of our green fleet sailors, Andrew McQueen and Simon Swinton both winning their age groups with Andrew also winning overall and Simon third. Many of the other Wakatere sailors had some good individual races with all sure to have learnt lots over the regatta.
Another
feature of the regatta was its size - the largest Optimist regatta in
NZ, surpassing the previous largest, the Wakatere Nationals. There
were 111 boats in the open fleet and 77 in the green fleet. Click on

Kate Ellingham wins!
NH P Class Tanner Cup Trials, Torbay 8 - 9 November 2003
Kate Ellingham has won the Tanner Cup Trials and will be representing North Harbour at the Tanner Cup in Christchurch. Kate broke the decades old stranglehold Murrays Bay and Torbay have had on this contest, although her brother Garth did win this event two years ago representing Murrays Bay.
The good news didn't stop there. Mike Snow-Hansen sailed well to finish 5th, Jake Lawrence sailed consistently for 6th, followed by Paul Snow-Hansen 8th, Andrew Knox 9th and Wade Gatfield 10th to give Wakatere 6 boats in the top 10 out of a fleet of 20.
Kate sailed consistently over the wide ranging conditions, winning only one race but always being a threat. The contest came down to three boats entering the last race, Kate, Chris Dawson and Josh McCormack. Wade had his best race to finish 2nd and push Chris down the fleet allowing Kate to win. There was an anxious wait while Chris attempted to reopen a protest hearing that he had lost before Kate was confirmed as the winner with Josh 2nd and Chris 3rd. Well done Kate. Click here for photo

NH P Class Tanner Cup Trials, Torbay 1 - 2 November 2003
The North Harbour Tanner Cup trials saw a strong Wakatere contingent, with seven sailors in the twenty boat fleet. Three races were scheduled for Saturday 1 Nov and Sunday 2 Nov. Race 1 saw Kate Ellingham leading from Mike Snow-Hansen for much of the race. However both were undone by the shifting winds and at the finish, Paul Snow-Hansen sailed from 4th to 2nd with Kate 3rd, Jake Lawrence 7th and Mike 8th.
The predicted fresh northerly arrived for the afternoon races and once again Kate and Mike were prominent. Mike was 3rd in the 2nd race with Kate 4th. In the 3rd race, Mike's forestay came adrift when he was placed 4th while Kate continued her good form with a 2nd placing.
The winds
changed to strong westerlies on Sunday. While the fleet left the
beach, gusts of 30 knots meant that racing was cancelled. This means
that 6 races will be held next weekend. Kate is holding second place
behind Chris Dawson of MBSC.
P Class & Optimist NI Champs, Napier 25 - 27 October 2003
Six Wakatere P sailors and one Starling sailor attended the NI Champs held in Napier. For the first two days of the contest, the wind blew from the south at 15 to 20 knots. Conditions were unpleasantly cold with snow supposedly falling to 700m. The wind for the one race held on the Monday was light and changeable with a sea breeze tying to supplant the westerly.
Garth Ellingham sailed extremely well to place 2nd and was very unlucky not to take out the title. Going into the final race, Garth held a one point lead having won all three races on the previous day. Unfortunately the light conditions meant that the race was shortened to only two legs and about 40 minutes. Garth had been on the wrong side of a shift metres from the top mark and the truncated race meant that there was no time to mount a comeback.
Kate Ellingham also sailed very well and had a very real chance of finishing 4th going into the last race. The changeable winds also put paid to her chances and she finsihed 9th overall.
Overall results:
Starlings, 1st Matt Coutts, 2nd Garth Ellingham, 3rd Nick Christiansen

A small
contingent of Wakatere sailors attended the Manly Regatta on a day
characterised by large wind shifts. Garth Ellingham won the Starling
class with 3 wins and a 2nd. Paul Snow-Hansen was the best performing
P Class finishing 4th overall, while Jake Lawrence and Andrew Knox
both had turns leading races, Jake winning the second
convincingly.
Season Points 12 October 2003
The wild
spring weather was still around for the second day of the season. The
coaching groups were confined to shore based activities by a large
surf crashing onto Narrow Neck Beach. This abated as a the northerly
wind was replaced by a westerly that weakened throughout the day to
the extent that the second races in the senior races were unable to
be held. Their situation was worsened by the drifting top mark which
meant that each leg was progressively longer. For results click on

Opening Day 5 October 2003

season was started with the speeches from Commodore John Ellingham,
President Don Brooke and Patron George Gair followed by the

all classes. The green fleet racing was cancelled before the boats
left the water. For results click on results_051003.htm

2003 Winter Champs, Murrays Bay 26 - 28 September
The seasons first major regatta, the Winter Champs was held at Murrays Bay over three days. Conditions varied form 6 knots up with racing curtailed on the final day due to a heavy rain squall. Star performer was Paul Snow-Hansen who dominated the Optimist class to score 7 wins and 2 seconds over the 9 races meaning that he ended with a perfect 7 points after the two drops.
Kate Ellingham also continued to sail well in the extremely competitive P Class fleet, occupying 2nd or 3rd throughout the regatta only to slip back into 4th place overall on countback at the end of the regatta. Jeremy Dey also showed that he is getting to grips with the difficult P Class finishing all the races including those on the heavier final day. In the Teams Trophy run in conjunction with the individual event, the Wakatere team of Kate, Jake Lawrence, Wade Gatfield and Mike Snow-Hansen placed 3rd behind Kohimaramara and Murrays Bay.

2003 Fist Full of Dollars Regatta, Torbay 21 September
The season's first Fist Full of Dollars Regatta was held in shifty north westerly conditions with a bit of thunder, rain, sometimes a reasonable amount of wind, other times absolutely no wind. The forecast 15 to 20 knots never appeared and racing was eventually called off with only 3 of the 4 races competed.
The top result from the Wakatere contingent came courtesy of Garth Ellingham's first placing in the competitive Starling fleet. Garth sailed consistently in difficult conditions that generally seemed to favour the lighter sailors.
The next best result was in the P Class where Wakatere scored well to finish with Paul Snow-Hansen 4th, Mike Snow-Hansen 6th, Kate Ellingham 8th, Jake Lawrence 11th and Brendan Sheehan in his first P race about 25th. During the Winter Champs (this Friday to Sunday), teams of 4 yachts will contest the Auckland P Class Teams Trophy. Clubs nominate their teams prior to the first race. It looks like Wakatere will field a competitive team, based on results in the first two regattas of this season.

2003 Icebreaker Regatta, Pupuke 13 Sept
The 2003 Season got underway at Lake Pupuke with the Icebreaker Regatta. Conditions were generally moderate and shifty, as is normal for Pupuke. Highlight for the Wakatere contingent was the battle for supremacy in the P Class between Kate Ellingham and Paul Snow-Hansen with 3 out of the 4 races being shared between them (Kate 2 wins, Paul 1). In the end, Kate triumphed by 1 point to take out the regatta. Congratulations Kate.
It was also good to see Simon Swinton sailing in the Opti Green fleet, his first regatta other than the Dirty Dog. Well done Simon and let's hope we see more of you and the other green fleeters on the regatta circuit.

And here's the news Dylan has been waiting for in Nevada - you've
managed to hang on to the lead in the Optimist Green Fleet Post-Xmas
series. One more weekend would probably have seen Brendan Sheehan
take out the title. Brendan sails his wooden Opti extremely well and
finished the season winning both races. Third place was also hotly
contested with Jono Spurdle not quite catching Amy Watkins who held
on for third place overall. Andrew McQueen was close behind in fifth,
stringing together a good series of results at the end of the season.
Congratulations to all the Green Fleeters for some tremendous
performances. Go to Season
Points for

2003 Optimist Nationals
Lack of wind meant that no racing was held on the final day, meaning that the regatta was reduced to 7 races held over 2 days. Paul Snow-Hansen was best placed Wakatere sailor finishing 2nd overall and securing a place in the NZ team to the Worlds to be held in the Canary Islands in July. Mike Snow-Hansen & Kate Ellingham were next best placed Wakatere sailors finishing 18th & 24th.

after convincingly winning race 3. Other good results were 2nd
plcaings in individual races by Andrew Knox, Kate Ellingham and Paul
Snow-Hansen. For full results click on http://www.kyc.org.nz/

2003 Auckland 3.7 Champs & 420 Regatta, 22 & 23 March
A fleet of 18 3.7s contested the Auckland Champs held at Wakatere. Racing was held in light to moderate easterlies, Saturday morning racing characterised by some large shifts. The pacesetter was Lance O'Connell from Rotorua whose regatta came to a premature end with a broken side stay with two races remaining. This allowed Nathan Handley from Wakatere to come through to convincingly win the title from Nick Dawson (RNZAF) and John Elliot (Hamilton). Thanks to John Ellingham and Matt Brown for efficiently carrying out their race officer duties.
The 420 fleet also sailed a regatta in conjunction with the 3.7s. Clear winners were Scott Kennedy & Alastair Thompson from Garth Ellingham and Scott Illingsworth.

Auckland Boys & Girls Champs, 22 March
Kate Ellingham convincingly won the Auckland Girls Optimist Champs held at Kohimaramara with placings of three firsts and one second. Well done Kate.
Over at the Boys Champs Paul Snow-Hansen almost emulated Kate's feat with 3 wins but a 16 th in race 2 blotted his copybook, meaning that he finished second overall.
It was also good to see George Grieves competing in the green fleet. Let's see more Wakatere green fleeters at regattas.

attracting fleets of 86 (open) and 89 (green). A large contingent of
Wakater sailors attended and it was good to see most of the green

Snow-Hansen, first overall & first in age, Mike Snow-Hansen 5th
overall & second in age and Finn Drummond, Dylan Vogel & Jess
Wild who all secured age group placings in their respective fleets.

Auckland Opti, P & Starling Champs. 1 & 2 March
The Auckland Starling, P & Opti Champs were held at Eastern Beach in light shifty conditions. Highlight for the Wakatere contingent was the performace of Jake Lawrence in the P Class. Jake placed fifth overall with a best placing of 2nd and with a number of turns leading the fleet.
The Wakatere
Optimist sailors turned in a mixed bag of results with little
consistency. The best results came in the slightly brisker breezes of
the last two races where Paul Snow-Hansen placed 2 & 4 and Mike
Snow-Hansen 5 & 3. Optimist results only can be found at

Secondary School Regatta 27 & 28 February
This year the
official secondary school regatta was called off and an invitation
regatta held at Kohimaramara in its place. Mike Snow-Hansen put an
indifferent first day's performance behind him to gain places of 2, 1
& 1 in the heavier winds of the last day to finish 2nd overall.
Kate Ellingham did not sail on the first day but her final results of
1, 2, 2 were enough to secure first girl overall.

Whirlwind at Hamilton Optisail
A whirlwind at the Hamilton Optisail created a stir at the yacht club. It damaged some of the boats (a wooden one quite badly), and lifted a rigged fibreglass boat about 25m into the air. It smashed a first floor window of the clubhouse, put a hole through the wall on the 2nd storey and demolished a loudspeaker. It finally flew right over the roof missing the aerials and flagpole, before landing in the lake some distance from the shore. The port stern corner was badly scratched and the eyelets tore out of the sail. It was fixed up with a replacement sail so that it could be used for the remainder of the 4-day live in camp. The only injury to the kids was a cut toe as they ran for cover. In fact they deemed the freak of nature as being "really cool", especially since it got a mention in the TV1 weather section which they all watched later that night.
