Reports from NZ teams
New Caledonia-NZ development team
Marcus Somerville from Wakatere has been selected in the NZ development team and will travel to New Caledonia November 8-11 to race in their championships. He is joined by 11 other age group sailors (11,12 and 13) from around NZ.
Website details will follow closer to the time.
Youth Worlds
The Youth Worlds are being held in Denmark from 12 to 18 July. Paul Snow-Hansen and Ben Goodwin are representing NZ in the double handers class. Report from Paul & Ben following the completion of the third day when they were placed 4th overall:
We have finished our 3rd day of racing and are currently in fourth place overall. It has been windy throughout this regatta and we have been racing a long way out from Arhus, with a 45 minute sail to the course at least. Denmark is beautiful but the weather is similar to Auckland’s.
We have had some good results with 3rd, 3rd and had the opportunity to win but placed 2nd in the middle race today. We have also made many mistakes mixed with bad luck- yesterday we were in 1st place with the Australians; we had a nice lead, but near the last top mark a 50 degree wind shift happened making the positions reverse order and we ended up in 14th.
Everyone has their excuses so we will move forward. We have learnt a lot, we are starting well and have got good speed. We have a day’s rest now and we have a big job to achieve to get on the podium but it is achievable.
They are currently remain 4th with one race to go.

Report from Kate Ellingham in Europe
I arrived mid April to compete in the French Olympic sailing week in Hyeres, Southern France. The weather I experienced there was a contrast to the warm conditions I left New Zealand in days earlier. So I spent the first two days of racing
freezing in 20-25knots, the third day was 30-40knots and was abandoned. Then it lightened off finishing on the last day with huge wind shifts and full pumping. I had a very disappointing regatta finishing 30th, due to poor starts and speed issues down wind.
From Hyeres I drove to Lacanau for a day of surfing and kiting before heading to Brest to compete in the Europeans. Brest was cold and wet, so training sessions were short, I even got caught in a hailstorm! The conditions were similar throughout the entire regatta with very shifty 8-12 knot winds. I was still having starting and down wind issues in this event how ever I was sailing the tricky up winds pretty well. I ended the regatta with a pleasing 19th place.
I was keen to leave Brest, which isn’t known to be the most beautiful or interesting place in search of warmer weather forecasted in Medemblik, Holland.
The drive to Holland with Aaron Macintosh took around 13 hours, so I was destroyed by the time we arrived at 2am! I had a week of really nice training with 18 knots most days, but then I got sick and couldn’t sail much just before Holland Regatta started. Most of the racing in the event was between 10-12 knots, I finally got my starts sorted and my speed all around the coarse was pleasing. After the first 2 days I had no races outside the top six, but then the race committee decided to score me OCS. They had confused me with someone else, I had witnesses and video evidence to prove that I wasn’t over. The committee also briefly brought down the individual recall flag after some one went back. So I protested and won, not because they admitted they confused my sail number but because they should only drop the individual recall flag when everyone that was over has gone back. Going into the medal race I was 6th with a good points buffer behind me, the conditions were quite extreme with 25-28 knots,
huge waves and pouring with rain. I was coming 5th until the end of the second lap when I went to low and crashed into the back of a wave and catapulted away from my gear. After that I was exhausted and ended 8th which was annoying, but I finished 6th over all and it was exciting to be competing in the medal race.
I then had two days in Amsterdam and then flew to Athens to stay with a friend for a rest and a bit of training. I’m now in Kiel for the rest of June to stay and train with a good friend of mine who lives there. Then compete in Kiel Week before returning home in July to go straight to university. Potential Windsurfers - Read This
WINDSURFING: Wakatere want to offer group windsurfing lessons to Wakatere members from Mad Loop at Lake Pupuke on Sundays from 12.00 to 2.00 this winter.
The idea is to encourage potential windsurfers to learn new skills rather than just to race. Essentially it is to have fun. Age is not an issue. From opti age up!
All of the gear is supplied by Mad Loop. For those wanting to purchase their own gear the recommended board is a Bic Techno 293. Current cost for a new board and rig is $2900.
There is specialised locker space available for boards at Wakatere.
For those who do become competitive there are Techno worlds and overseas regattas in Noumea and other exciting places.
Should anyone want more information they can call Ian Swinton, the Wakatere techno rep on 376 2013.
Notice for Optimists
OPTIMISTS
The Optimist committee is working on some programmes offering a chance to continue sailing optis through the winter. Auckland's winter is mild and by keeping sessions short and being properly clothed, year round sailing can be enjoyable. This is for those opti members that sailed/raced at the club last season, this is not a ‘learn to sail’ course. Wakatere Opti rep - Andrew Copeland 021-665 085

SI Opti Champs, Lyttelton 23/24 February 2008
Last weekend a group of our sailors travelled to Lyttleton to try out the local conditions at the South Island Champs. A very competitive fleet of 49 boats took part, including many of the top Auckland sailors. This was a great warm up for the Nationals and was sailed in very challenging conditions. On Saturday racing was called off after the wind gusts rose
above 30 knots. The two races that were sailed that day were in about 20-25knots and, by Auckland standards, in a huge swell. Sunday started out windy as well with 18 knots at the start of the first race. Later in the
day the wind shifted 90 degrees and dropped down to about 10 knots, the big shift causing the abandonment of a race already underway and restricting the day to three races overall.
Our Waka sailors did us proud in the five race series, with Logan Dunning-Beck taking out the championship in 1st and Alex Munro coming in a strong 3rd overall. Close on his heels was Sam Schofield in 4th. James
Roberts finished 12th, Mahia Pepper 23rd and Markus Somerville 36th in only his third ever Open Fleet regatta

North Island Optimist Champs, Rotorua 17-18 November 2007
Thirteen of our young sailors, and their support teams, headed down to Rotorua last weekend to contest the North Islands. They produced some great results, had some fun and hopefully gained a lot of positive experience for their future race careers. Conditions were generally fine with very light and shifty winds, which made for a very challenging event with lots of delays and plenty of false starts to frustrate everyone – particularly the spectators!
In the Open fleet there were 109 entries, all on the start line at once so there was a lot of yelling going on in the last minute of the start sequences. Black flag fever struck and three of our sailors experienced disqualifications for being over the line – although this seemed to produce more smiles and laughs than it did heartache. In the end the race officials did a sterling job and managed to get in six races. Typically, no sooner were the sailors off the water at the end of racing on day 2 than a strong and consistent wind arrived – much to the annoyance of the sailors and officials who had been fighting crazy shifts in 5 knots, or less, of breeze all weekend.
Alex Munro finished 5th overall and was the top Wakatere sailor in Open Fleet, a tremendous result considering he won Green Fleet at this event only last year. Jack Collinson finished in 6th overall, putting in a fantastic effort sailing for the first time in over a month since he broke a bone in his hand. Logan Dunning-Beck, our defending North Island and National champion, finished in 10th overall which was also a brilliant effort considering he has been focusing on his P-Class sailing so far this season. Three sailors in the top-10 for Wakatere, a very strong showing for our club.
Sam Schofield finished 16th overall, James Roberts in 21st and Mahia Pepper in 28th. Mahia in fact won race 2, which is a stunning result for a sailor in his first major Open Fleet. Our lone lady in Open Fleet, Ellie Copeland, finished in 57th and Liam Coleman came in at 67th. Both Ellie and Liam had top-20 finishes during the event which was brilliant. A special mention to Aaron Gibb-Pearson who travelled all the way to Rotorua only to become quite ill and be unable to sail at all.
Open fleet was won by Sam Mackay from Napier, with Naomi Mannering from Napier in 2nd and Erica Dawson from Murrays Bay in 3rd.
Over in Green Fleet our four Wakaterians had fun and sailed well during the seven races held. Mathew Kempkers finished 4th overall (out of 60 entries), confirming that his Green Fleet days are over. Lukas Walton finished in 23rd in his first ever regatta, Danielle Schofield came in at 40th and Kelsey Smith finished in 45th.

Opening Day 2007
2007 Winchamps, Murrays Bay 28-30 September
Report from James & Donn Roberts... A new season of sailing started with a beautifully fine crisp day for the Winter Champs at Murrays Bay Sailing Club. On leaving Devonport I was worried that there might not be enough wind, but by the time we arrived at Murrays Bay there was a definite sea breeze and building all the time. There was a definite buzz in the air as there had been sailing tuition organized from Monday onwards and the Secondary Schools Girls competition mid week. Wakatere was well represented by in the 420's, 470's, Techno boards, P Class, Starling, Laser 4.7, Opti open and Opti Green fleets. 320 boats and boards competing over 3 days. Unfortunately there was no club representation in the laser, laser radial, Javelin, RSX, or splash classes. ( we can't do everything, can we?)
It was impressive to see the effort put in by Napier Sailing Club who organized over 30 competitors to travel up to Auckland. They also achieved at a high level in the fleets they competed in. We had competitors from Nelson, Christchurch, Otago, and even Australia attending.
The rest of my comments relate to the Opti Open course.
The lighter winds on the first day was of advantage to the smaller sailors. Those who have been sailing at Lake Pupuke over the winter or attending the sailing clinic did well.
On the second day the breeze filled in to a steady 10-12 knots. Excellent sailing conditions with those sailors not allowing for the tide often going past the lay lines.
Again a consistent performance from our club sailors with Jack Collinson picking up an emphatic 1st in the third race. All of our team were consistent but looking forward to the following day's forecast of a steady 20knots building thru the day with the occasional squall for a little bit of excitement. A small front was to cross the North Island at about mid day with worsening conditions for the afternoon.
The first race got underway in 22knts. Those tacking to the right looked to gain the advantage until the fleet converged at the top mark where the inshore half of the fleet were generally leading. Alex Munro was in third and worked hard in the reach and run to cement a good lead over the trailing group of boats in 4th.
Just before the second race of the day we had to tow a sailor in who was cold so missed the start.
When we returned the fleet was approaching the third mark and Alex was in the lead. He was eventually hunted down and passed by Naiomi Mannering (11th NZer at the 2007 Nationals) Sam MacKay (6th in the 2007 Nationals) and Ryan Arnhelm (an up and coming sailor from Nelson.) Distinguished company to keep.
The fleet was bought off the water for lunch and the last two races were not sailed, much to our team's disappointment. Good results in the fresher conditions and a large number of withdrawals meant that our boys points tallies and positions were improving on the last day.
The Opti open was where the largest number of Wakatere sailors were entered. In the Opti open fleet of 64 boats we had Jack Collinson 6th, Alex Munro 11th, Sam Schofield 12th, James Roberts 22nd, and for his first regatta in open fleet Mahia Pepper in 34th with an 11th and 15th place in the last 2 races. Definitely a talented sailor.
In green fleet was Nathan Kampkers was 5th, Finn Croft 15th, Lukas Walton 19th, and Danielle Schofield 22nd. A great effort from some very new sailors.
In the laser 4.7 fleet Nick Mahoney was 1st. He totally dominated the fleet.
In the P Class Logan Dunning-Beck was 5th with a 1st place on the last day. This is a really tricky class and is extremely tough to sail in fresh conditions.
In the Starling class an excellent fleet of 61 boats took to the water. Finn Drummond was 27th and Nick Croft 30th (Nick has only just started racing in this class.)
In the 420s Chris Steele and Thomas Saunders suffered gear and body damage. They did not compete in the last 3 races. They finished 7th on a fleet of 9 boats.
In the 470s Paul Snow-Hansen and his crew of Riley Dean from Naval Point finished 5th and Mike with his crew of Joshua MacCormack (MBSC) finished 6th in a highly competitive fleet of 9 boats.
In the Techno Boards Simon Swinton finished 8th and Terry Cookson 9th.
In the RSX Kate Ellingham was 6th place and second female in a fleet of 13 boards.
Some excellent racing coming up with Wakatere Club opening next weekend and a variety of events around Auckland. Even if you are not competing get on board a patrol craft and let your kids see what great fun is in competitive sailing. A helping hand is always appreciated.

US 29er Champs
A report from Paul Snow-Hansen:
Today was a lot of fun with 18 knots most of the time. We have really good speed, probably the best out there. We led around the first mark today by 100 metres or more but ended up getting sailed around when we sailed into no breeze. We learnt alot and gained on almost every other down wind - we ended up 4th in that race. The 2nd race was unfortunate when we got caught behind a keel boat practically going through the gate and went from 3rd to 9th but gained back to 8th. The third race today was mean as it became really windy and we overtook someone on the last downwind when they capsized and got 2nd. We had a good last race where we got taken out by another keel boat on the start but made a good gain on the second beat to lead around the last mark and take the race.
Yeaterday we had good speed but we had to concentrate so much that we made some average calls tactically. The conditions were light and really sloppy making it hard not to heal over to windward. Our main problem was starts or acceration but we improved today.
