Finn Nationals, Maraetai, 4-7 March 2010

Mark Perrow has won the Finn Nationals. Report from Sail-World follows:

The 2010 NZ Finn Nationals sailed at Maraetai 4-7 March was won by Mark Perrow in a display of consistent sailing and a degree of good fortune in a boat borrowed from Dan Slater.

For the 8 races over the first 3 days Dan produced a clinical performance to win all 8 and looked on track to complete the task on the final day. However he was a no-show on Sunday when the final 3 races were sailed. This meant he carried a DNS and allowed Mark to finish ahead on 16 points against Dan's 26. Click here to read more...

470 Nationals, Wakatere, 6-8 March 2010

Geoff Woolley & Dan Willcox are the new 470 National Champs. The last two races were held in very light northerly winds. Jo Aleh & Olivia Powrie won both but could not overcome Geoff & Dan's lead. Third were Mark Overington & Ben Goodwin. Full results can be found by clicking here

Day 2 was similar to Day 1 with a brisk breeze subsiding through the day. Geoff Woolley & Dan Willcox started the day with a victory but Jo Aleh & Olivia Powrie closed the gap with wins in the final 2 races.

Day 1 of the Nationals was held in winds that covered all points of the compass rose. Despite this four races were held with the wind strength between 0 and 15 knots. Geoff Woolley & Dan Willcox dominated the results with 3 first placings.

North Harbour Starling Match Racing Trials, Wakatere, 28 November, 2009

Logan Dunning Beck (FRA01) and Chris Steele in the finals  - click here for more photos James Roberts and Chris Steele - semi-finals

Logan Dunning-Beck took out the North Harbour match racing trials from club member Chris Steele in a close battle this weekend. Conditions were gusty north westerlies, shifty and, of course, the infamous Wakatere tide was a factor. Wakatere's James Roberts made the semi finals, along with Murrays Bay sailor Elise Beaver. Next year, with a little more experience under their caps, we're likely to see James and Elise asserting themselves in the Class.

The semi finals and finals were a best-of-three competition, and while former NH representative Chris had a relatively easy ride against James, the remainder of the racing was very close. In the second semi-final Logan and Elise had a win each, followed by another for Logan in the brisk conditions directly in front of the clubrooms. Heavy cloud remained overhead bringing squally wind which swung wildly from moderate to strong in the brief duration of an approximate 12 minute race.

Not unexpectedly, the final came down to a battle between old on-the-water-rivals Logan and Chris... the first race was very close with Logan getting ahead of Chris in the last few metres before the finish line. The second race was won quite comfortably by Chris, so with one apiece it was all on. Race three was very close, Logan managed to win the start and keep just ahead of Chris through most of the race, though depending on your viewing position it looked as if it could go either way. Chris hit the top mark and was unable to recover in the final down wind, making Logan the North Harbour representative for the National competition which will be sailed in Lyttelton early next year.

Wakatere would like to thanks those who gave up their Saturday to help out on the course, and on shore; also, well done to all sailors who took part.

North Island P & Starling Champs, Tauranga 24-26 October 2009

Wakatere Sailors performed well at the 2009 NI Champs with Chris winning from Logan. James, Matthew, Mahia and Alex all had some top 10 finishes to make six Wakatere competitors in the top 13.  Heather and Lauren found the racing tough but have set some standards to compare their improvements against for the future. Ellie also sailed well to place 11th in her first major P Class regatta.

Racing was held over two days with wind ranging from light to moderate strength, plenty of tide to consider and some good wind shifts to exploit. Even the top guys had to work hard to get the good results and most slipped up at least once. In the end, however, consistently good starts, and acceleration off the start line meant Chris and Logan ended up at the top of the board again. Click on the Starling Portal for results.

Congratulations - Alex Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher of Murrays Bay win Gold, Finn Drummond and Frankie Lardies win Silver at the International 420 Worlds, Riva del Garda, Italy

drummond pic

New Zealand's 420 team has just completed the 420 World Championship and come away with a gold for Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher of Murrays Bay, and silver for Wakatere club member Finn Drummond with helm Frankie Lardies of Glendowie.

Going into the final day of racing Frankie Lardies and Finn Drummond had secured a healthy 10pt lead over third position and sailed three good races to hold the silver position with a 27 point margin. Antonios Tsimpoukelis, George Karonis of Greece dispelled anyones hopes of snatching the series by coming out and winning the first race of the day, followed by another good result which decided the Open class winner.
Frankie and Finn sailed an extremely consistent series amongst such a large fleet and found the speed to counter the challenges of 60 boats on the start line.

Frankie and Finn have been sailing together for a year and spent last season in the 470, feeling they'd seen benefits for previous sailors who had crossed over classes. This was the third World Championship for Frankie, and the second for Finn who competed with Marcus Hansen last year in Athens.

Also competing in the championship were Logan Dunning-Beck with Ben Goodwin (Napier), who topped the Silver fleet, and Alex Munro with Sam Schofield. Logan and Ben's OCS placings during the qualification round put them out of Gold fleet running, however in a fleet of 122 boats competition was fierce. Alex and Sam were also in the Silver fleet and finished a creditable 18th.

2009 Brass Monkey Amateur Open, Napier 30 - 31 May

The inaugural Brass Monkey Amateur Open was held in Napier over Queens’ Birthday weekend.  As the final regatta before the 2009/2010 Ranking/Worlds Selection Series kicks off in Wellington in October, this was a great chance for NZ OK sailors to get some winter regatta training, test their latest gear developments and, of course, have a few rumpos with their mates.  Marty Weeks and Brass Monkey Yachting took the opportunity to organise a fantastic, extremely well-run regatta, with excellent support provided by Napier Sailing Club personnel who gave of their holiday weekend to run races for us.  All of the fleet are extremely grateful for that support.  Read more...

Various Keelboat Results

A number of Wakatere keelboat sailors have excelled in recent weeks.

In Lake Garda, just off Malcesine (Italy) the New Zealand crew skippered by Roger Pagani, have won the World Final of the BMW Sailing Cup, from an eight nation fleet. Pagani and his crew from the Young 88 class were selected from the BMW Cup regatta sailed in Auckland under the auspices of Royal NZ yacht Squadron and Buckland's Beach Yacht Club, using a selection process which allowed any keelboat crew to compete for selection. Roger Pagani is a WBC member and his son Leo is in the Sunday opti programme.

Stfan Goldwater has finished fourth in the Young 88 nationals and first owner/driver. His boat, Panama Jack, sailed under the Wakatere flag.

And finally, Garth Ellingham and friends have just competed in their first Group 1 Match Racing event, finishing a creditable 10 th. See reports and updates at http://www.wakaracing.blogspot.com/

2009 Sunburst Nationals, Wakatere 24-26 January 2009

2009 Sunburst Nationals.

The Rangitoto Channel out from the Wakatere Boating Club provided three days of blazing sunshine, calm to moderate wind and flat water for the 2009 Sunburst Nationals. The seven race series was sailed over the three day Auckland Anniversary holiday weekend, and the Monday races were included in the Anniversary Day Regatta program. The fleet comprised 27 boats, and as is usual with Sunbursts there were skippers and crews of ages ranging from schoolchildren to 60 plus, with many parent and child combinations.
Wellington Sailmaker Brett Linton with daughter Penny from Worser Bay Boating Club, with first or second placings in each race were clear winners overall. Grant Bourke and Nikita Stetensko of Pupuke Sailing Club, sailing a recently launched glass boat with Quantum Sails were second and Dean and Chris Coleman of Wakatere Boating club were close behind in third place.
Saturday was frustrating for everyone with very light and shifting breezes, and the first race attempt was eventually canned after running out of the allowed time. The second attempt at a race on Saturday afternoon got a result, even though it was sailed in the similar conditions. On the Sunday there were four races scheduled and completed, with the wind coming up in the afternoon to fourteen knots, the strongest over the contest. Mondays two races were in the six to thirteen  knot range.
The Wakatere Cup for performance on handicap over the last six races, was won by Craig and Mitchell Fraser. The Kettlewell Cup for Under 19 years youth sailors and the Secondary School Cup was won by Nathan and Jamie Long, who were sixth overall in the fleet.
With 1809 boats built since the first one in 1964, the Sunburst is one of the most popular sailing boats built in New Zealand with boats at most centreboard sailing clubs, and an even spread of boats throughout the country. It is used as a two handed training boat by many Yacht Clubs, Schools, Sea Scouts and Young Mariners groups as well as being a competitive race class. The Class Association is  very active with CNC routed frame pack kitsets and plans being available for wooden boat construction and glass boats are produced commercially from Association owned moulds.
Participation at all ages is encouraged, and indeed the Masters, Grand Masters and Veterens Prizes, this year won by Dean Coleman, Bruce Yarnton and Maurice Scott respectively are keenly sought after.
For North Island Sunbursts the next regatta on the Sunburst racing calendar is the Sunburst North Island Champs, being run at Worser Bay in Wellington over Waitangi Weekend. Defending North Island Champ from 2008, and current National champ Brett Linton will not be competing as he will be OD for this series as well as the R Class Leander Trophy, Z Class worlds and OK Interdominion contests that will be running concurrently over the same time period.
The next regatta in the South Island, the Sunburst South Island Championships will be run at MacAndrew Bay boating Club in Dunedin over the same weekend. Look to the Sunburst website   www.sunburst.org.nz  for NORs and details.

Congratulations to the winners, Brett & Penny Linton from Worser Bay Boating Club. Second were Grant Bourke & Nikita Stetensko from Pupuke Boating Club followed by Dean & Chris Coleman from Wakatere. Click here for results.

Handicap placings were first Craig & Mitchell Fraser (WBC), second Nathan & Jamie Long (WBC) and third Heath & William Morris (Paremata SC). Click here for handicap results.

P & Starling Nationals, Whangarei 17 - 23 January 2009

Eight Wakatere starling sailors contested the Nationals, at Parua Bay this January. It was the first test for the Wakatere second trailer with starlings, managing to transport  5 hulls and 7 rigs.  James Munro took Mad Dog up to support the fleet and most sailors arrived Sat, leaving time to practice and get used to the local conditions. Chris had been there a day early to prepare for the Match racing where he represented North Harbour.

There was a very competitive fleet of 120 starlings and  50 P class.  Chris came send to Thomas Saunders of Tauranga in a closely contested match racing series held Sat and Sunday.

The main racing started Monday with a testing fresh conditions gusting from the SW up to 40 knots at times.  Mad Dog's job as mark layer was busy as the large bottom mark had too much windage for the small anchor provided. The light sailors of the group had a lot of work cut out for them. But Logan still seemed to be right up there, with Chris and the top group with a few top 5 results. Chris began his regatta the best way he could, 3 bullets. For James, Alex and Heather the race seemed to be against the clock, as you could only finish 30 mins behind the first boat. And cart wheeling slowed them down a bit! This meant a long night ahead for John the boat builder.

Second day and the wind blew in, again! It was a little lighter but still more than desired for most. Logan and Chris did very well again with Logan getting a 3rd 4th and a 9th and Chris getting 3 top 3 results. Results were slightly improved for everyone else.

The 3rd day was the complete opposite extreme, with about 12 knots dropping to around 5 in the afternoon and incredibly shifty. This was where all of our team did best! Logan did incredibly well, getting 2 bullets and a second, which he later found to be OCS. Sam had one great race being a 3rd, even with a leaky boat! But for everyone, being consistent was difficult, as the breeze was shifting up to 45 degrees often. Chris again did well with 2 firsts and a race which wasn’t so good. James and Alex also had stunning races. James got 2x 9ths and a 2nd but was called OCS. This result dropped him back to silver fleet. Alex found it much easier with all top 20 results. Heather, Lucy and Sam all had a much better day, improving all the time.

On the 4th day, the fleets were split into gold and silver. Sam, Logan and Chris made gold. Alex, James, Lucy, Heather and Kelsey silver fleet. Generally heavier sailors filled gold fleet based on good results from the first two days. The next few days were to be light though, so it caused a lot of place changing. A rather shifty sea breeze from NE of about 12 knots, only kicking in at about 1pm. Chris had good results but having to make a few massive comebacks. He got all top 10’s. Logan and Sam had days they would probably rather have forgotten! In silver fleet everyone was going well with Alex and James right up there (all top 10 results) and Lucy with 7th and 8th places. Heather's best result was a 19th on the last day and Kelsey found this a tough first Starling Nations but had 2x 46th places in testing conditions.

The sailors liked the venue having plenty of grass area to rig. It was good for shore based spectators as the racing was so close in. The meals at the Parua Bay Tavern were great too.

In the end Chris came second, once again behind Thomas Saunders.

Report from Kate Ellingham in Europe

I arrived mid April to compete in the French Olympic sailing week in Hyeres, Southern France. The weather I experienced there was a contrast to the warm conditions I left New Zealand in days earlier. So I spent the first two days of racing
freezing in 20-25knots, the third day was 30-40knots and was abandoned. Then it lightened off finishing on the last day with huge wind shifts and full pumping. I had a very disappointing regatta finishing 30th, due to poor starts and speed issues down wind.

From Hyeres I drove to Lacanau for a day of surfing and kiting before heading to Brest to compete in the Europeans. Brest was cold and wet, so training sessions were short, I even got caught in a hailstorm! The conditions were similar throughout the entire regatta with very shifty 8-12 knot winds. I was still having starting and down wind issues in this event how ever I was sailing the tricky up winds pretty well. I ended the regatta with a pleasing 19th place.
I was keen to leave Brest, which isn’t known to be the most beautiful or interesting place in search of warmer weather forecasted in Medemblik, Holland.
The drive to Holland with Aaron Macintosh took around 13 hours, so I was destroyed by the time we arrived at 2am! I had a week of really nice training with 18 knots most days, but then I got sick and couldn’t sail much just before Holland Regatta started. Most of the racing in the event was between 10-12 knots, I finally got my starts sorted and my speed all around the coarse was pleasing. After the first 2 days I had no races outside the top six, but then the race committee decided to score me OCS. They had confused me with someone else, I had witnesses and video evidence to prove that I wasn’t over. The committee also briefly brought down the individual recall flag after some one went back. So I protested and won, not because they admitted they confused my sail number but because they should only drop the individual recall flag when everyone that was over has gone back. Going into the medal race I was 6th with a good points buffer behind me, the conditions were quite extreme with 25-28 knots,
huge waves and pouring with rain. I was coming 5th until the end of the second lap when I went to low and crashed into the back of a wave and catapulted away from my gear. After that I was exhausted and ended 8th which was annoying, but I finished 6th over all and it was exciting to be competing in the medal race.
I then had two days in Amsterdam and then flew to Athens to stay with a friend for a rest and a bit of training. I’m now in Kiel for the rest of June to stay and train with a good friend of mine who lives there. Then compete in Kiel Week before returning home in July to go straight to university. Potential Windsurfers - Read This

WINDSURFING: Wakatere want to offer group windsurfing lessons to Wakatere members from Mad Loop at Lake Pupuke on Sundays from 12.00 to 2.00 this winter.
The idea is to encourage potential windsurfers to learn new skills rather than just to race. Essentially it is to have fun. Age is not an issue. From opti age up!
All of the gear is supplied by Mad Loop. For those wanting to purchase their own gear the recommended board is a Bic Techno 293. Current cost for a new board and rig is $2900.
There is specialised locker space available for boards at Wakatere.
For those who do become competitive there are Techno worlds and overseas regattas in Noumea and other exciting places.
Should anyone want more information they can call Ian Swinton, the Wakatere techno rep on 376 2013.

SI Opti Champs, Lyttelton 23/24 February 2008

Last weekend a group of our sailors travelled to Lyttleton to try out the local conditions at the South Island Champs. A very competitive fleet of 49 boats took part, including many of the top Auckland sailors. This was a great warm up for the Nationals and was sailed in very challenging conditions. On Saturday racing was called off after the wind gusts rose
above 30 knots. The two races that were sailed that day were in about 20-25knots and, by Auckland standards, in a huge swell. Sunday started out windy as well with 18 knots at the start of the first race. Later in the
day the wind shifted 90 degrees and dropped down to about 10 knots, the big shift causing the abandonment of a race already underway and restricting the day to three races overall.

Our Waka sailors did us proud in the five race series, with Logan Dunning-Beck taking out the championship in 1st and Alex Munro coming in a strong 3rd overall. Close on his heels was Sam Schofield in 4th. James
Roberts finished 12th, Mahia Pepper 23rd and Markus Somerville 36th in only his third ever Open Fleet regatta

North Island Optimist Champs, Rotorua 17-18 November 2007

Thirteen of our young sailors, and their support teams, headed down to Rotorua last weekend to contest the North Islands.  They produced some great results, had some fun and hopefully gained a lot of positive experience for their future race careers.  Conditions were generally fine with very light and shifty winds, which made for a very challenging event with lots of delays and plenty of false starts to frustrate everyone – particularly the spectators!

In the Open fleet there were 109 entries, all on the start line at once so there was a lot of yelling going on in the last minute of the start sequences. Black flag fever struck and three of our sailors experienced disqualifications for being over the line – although this seemed to produce more smiles and laughs than it did heartache. In the end the race officials did a sterling job and managed to get in six races. Typically, no sooner were the sailors off the water at the end of racing on day 2 than a strong and consistent wind arrived – much to the annoyance of the sailors and officials who had been fighting crazy shifts in 5 knots, or less, of breeze all weekend.

Alex Munro finished 5th overall and was the top Wakatere sailor in Open Fleet, a tremendous result considering he won Green Fleet at this event only last year.  Jack Collinson finished in 6th overall, putting in a fantastic effort sailing for the first time in over a month since he broke a bone in his hand.  Logan Dunning-Beck, our defending North Island and National champion, finished in 10th overall which was also a brilliant effort considering he has been focusing on his P-Class sailing so far this season.  Three sailors in the top-10 for Wakatere, a very strong showing for our club.

Sam Schofield finished 16th overall, James Roberts in 21st and Mahia Pepper in 28th.  Mahia in fact won race 2, which is a stunning result for a sailor in his first major Open Fleet. Our lone lady in Open Fleet, Ellie Copeland, finished in 57th and Liam Coleman came in at 67th.  Both Ellie and Liam had top-20 finishes during the event which was brilliant.  A special mention to Aaron Gibb-Pearson who travelled all the way to Rotorua only to become quite ill and be unable to sail at all.

Open fleet was won by Sam Mackay from Napier, with Naomi Mannering from Napier in 2nd and Erica Dawson from Murrays Bay in 3rd.

Over in Green Fleet our four Wakaterians had fun and sailed well during the seven races held. Mathew Kempkers finished 4th overall (out of 60 entries), confirming that his Green Fleet days are over. Lukas Walton finished in 23rd in his first ever regatta, Danielle Schofield came in at 40th and Kelsey Smith finished in 45th.

2007 Opening Day 7 October

Thanks to Thomas Ashley who came along and spoke at opening day.

Opening Day 2007

2007 Winchamps, Murrays Bay 28-30 September

Report from James & Donn Roberts... A new season of sailing started with a beautifully fine crisp day for the Winter Champs at Murrays Bay Sailing Club. On leaving Devonport I was worried that there might not be enough wind, but by the time we arrived at Murrays Bay there was a definite sea breeze and building all the time.  There was a definite buzz in the air as there had been sailing tuition organized from Monday onwards and the Secondary Schools Girls competition mid week. Wakatere was well represented by in the 420's, 470's, Techno boards, P Class, Starling, Laser 4.7, Opti open and Opti Green fleets. 320 boats and boards competing over 3 days. Unfortunately there was no club representation in the laser, laser radial, Javelin, RSX, or splash classes. ( we can't do everything, can we?)

It was impressive to see the effort put in by Napier Sailing Club who organized over 30 competitors to travel up to Auckland. They also achieved at a high level in the fleets they competed in. We had competitors from Nelson, Christchurch, Otago, and even Australia attending.

The rest of my comments relate to the Opti Open course.

The lighter winds on the first day was of advantage to the smaller sailors. Those who have been sailing at Lake Pupuke over the winter or attending the sailing clinic did well.

On the second day the breeze filled in to a steady 10-12 knots. Excellent sailing conditions with those sailors not allowing for the tide often going past the lay lines.
Again a consistent performance from our club sailors with Jack Collinson picking up an emphatic 1st in the third race. All of our team were consistent but looking forward to the following day's forecast of a steady 20knots building thru the day with the occasional squall for a little bit of excitement. A small front was to cross the North Island at about mid day with worsening conditions for the afternoon.

The first race got underway in 22knts. Those tacking to the right looked to gain the advantage until the fleet converged at the top mark where the inshore half of the fleet were generally leading. Alex Munro was in third and worked hard in the reach and run to cement a good lead over the trailing group of boats in 4th.

Just before the second race of the day we had to tow a sailor in who was cold so missed the start.

When we returned the fleet was approaching the third mark and Alex was in the lead. He was eventually hunted down and passed by Naiomi Mannering (11th NZer at the 2007 Nationals) Sam MacKay (6th in the 2007 Nationals) and Ryan Arnhelm (an up and coming sailor from Nelson.) Distinguished company to keep.

The fleet was bought off the water for lunch and the last two races were not sailed, much to our team's disappointment. Good results in the fresher conditions and a large number of withdrawals meant that our boys points tallies and positions were improving on the last day.

The Opti open was where the largest number of Wakatere sailors were entered. In the Opti open fleet of 64 boats we had Jack Collinson 6th, Alex Munro 11th, Sam Schofield 12th, James Roberts 22nd, and for his first regatta in open fleet Mahia Pepper in 34th with an 11th and 15th place in the last 2 races. Definitely a talented sailor.

In green fleet was Nathan Kampkers was 5th, Finn Croft 15th, Lukas Walton 19th, and Danielle Schofield 22nd. A great effort from some very new sailors.

In the laser 4.7 fleet Nick Mahoney was 1st. He totally dominated the fleet.

In the P Class Logan Dunning-Beck was 5th with a 1st place on the last day. This is a really tricky class and is extremely tough to sail in fresh conditions.

In the Starling class an excellent fleet of 61 boats took to the water. Finn Drummond was 27th and Nick Croft 30th (Nick has only just started racing in this class.)

In the 420s Chris Steele and Thomas Saunders suffered gear and body damage. They did not compete in the last 3 races. They finished 7th on a fleet of 9 boats.

In the 470s Paul Snow-Hansen and his crew of Riley Dean from Naval Point finished 5th and Mike with his crew of Joshua MacCormack (MBSC) finished 6th in a highly competitive fleet of 9 boats.

In the Techno Boards Simon Swinton finished 8th and Terry Cookson 9th.

In the RSX Kate Ellingham was 6th place and second female in a fleet of 13 boards.

Some excellent racing coming up with Wakatere Club opening next weekend and a variety of events around Auckland. Even if you are not competing get on board a patrol craft and let your kids see what great fun is in competitive sailing. A helping hand is always appreciated.

US 29er Champs

A report from Paul Snow-Hansen:

Today was a lot of fun with 18 knots most of the time. We have really good speed, probably the best out there. We led around the first mark today by 100 metres or more but ended up getting sailed around when we sailed into no breeze. We learnt alot and gained on almost every other down wind - we ended up 4th in that race. The 2nd race was unfortunate when we got caught behind a keel boat practically going through the gate and went from 3rd to 9th but gained back to 8th. The third race today was mean as it became really windy and we overtook someone on the last downwind when they capsized and got 2nd.  We had a good last race where we got taken out by another keel boat on the start but made a good gain on the second beat to lead around the last mark and take the race.

Yeaterday we had good speed but we had to concentrate so much that we made some average calls tactically. The conditions were light and really sloppy making it hard not to heal over to windward. Our main problem was starts or acceration but we improved today.
