US 29er Champs

A report from Paul Snow-Hansen:

Today was a lot of fun with 18 knots most of the time. We have really good speed, probably the best out there. We led around the first mark today by 100 metres or more but ended up getting sailed around when we sailed into no breeze. We learnt alot and gained on almost every other down wind - we ended up 4th in that race. The 2nd race was unfortunate when we got caught behind a keel boat practically going through the gate and went from 3rd to 9th but gained back to 8th. The third race today was mean as it became really windy and we overtook someone on the last downwind when they capsized and got 2nd.  We had a good last race where we got taken out by another keel boat on the start but made a good gain on the second beat to lead around the last mark and take the race.

Yeaterday we had good speed but we had to concentrate so much that we made some average calls tactically. The conditions were light and really sloppy making it hard not to heal over to windward. Our main problem was starts or acceration but we improved today.

Club Champs 07

Go to season points to see fianl results for all classes except for the Lasers. The final Laser races are scheduled for 22 April.

Youth Selections

Paul Snow-Hansen & Blair Tuke (Kerikeri CC) have won the double handed nomination for the Youth Worlds by placing second in Youthsail and pushing the winners of the Nationals, Thomas & Jason Saunders, back to 5th. The regatta was hampered by strong winds meaning that racing was held on only 1.5 days out of the 4 days scheduled. Most of the nine races were held in light to moderate winds. After a good start by Paul & Blair, Thomas & Jason strung together a strong set of performances to take a handy lead. Unfortunately they were sitting on a 14th place from the first race giving Paul & Blair the opportunity to sail them back in the fleet and forcing them to count one of their two poor races. This they duly did in the second last race, Thomas & Jason securing a further 14th place meaning Paul & Blair only needed a safe final race to take out the trials. However, an ocs in that race followed by a tardy return meant the pressure was on from the start. Luckily for Paul & Blair, Thomas & Jason had their worst race of the regatta allowing Paul & Blair to shadow them and take second place in Youthsail.

The double handed class in  this year's Youth Worlds (to be held in Kingston, Canada) is the 29er meaning a steep learning curve for the boys over the next few months.

Easter Nationals - Logan Dunning-Beck takes out Opti Nats

Logan Dunning-Beck has won the Opti Nats and has qualified in the team to attend the Worlds in Sardinia. Congratulations Logan. Chris Steele lead for the first two days of the regatta and finished 4th, a good result for a heavier sailor in the light conditions that existed for the regatta. Chris slso qualified for the Worlds teams. Many of the other Wakatere sailors had good results, both in the Nationals and in the green fleet regatta held in conjunction with the Nationals. Click on the following link for full results: Opti Nats

Meanwhile, the conditions in Wellington were also light for the 420 and Sunburst Nationals. Paul Snow-Hansen and Blair Tuke lead for much of the 420 regatta but ended up on equal points with Thomas and Jason Saunders from Tauranga who took out the title on countback. The 420 sailors continue on with the Youth Champs with the winner of the trials being calculated from both the nationals and youth champs, the latter taking precedence in the event of a tie. Forcast for the next few days is for very heavy winds so there may be little racing.
Cllick here for results of the 420 Nats

Across the hill in Worser Bay, four Wakatere crews battled out with a strong contingent of mainly Wellington sailors in the 34 boat fleet. Best performers were Mike & Jamie Long in 4th and Dean & Liam Coleman in 6th. Mike & Jamie were first in the over 50 parent & child division. Wiinner s were (defending champ?) Greg & Finn Wright from Worser Bay.

2006 420 Pre-Worlds & Worlds, Takapuna 27 December - 9 January

Wakatere have made a commitment to Takapuna to supply two manned patrol boats to help run the Pre-Worlds and Worlds. One patrol boat (4.2m centre console) will act as a rescue boat while the other, the Wakatere, will be stationed at Mark 4, moving it when asked using a GPS, and taking places as the 420s pass. Not only will this be an opportunity to help the NZ sailing community but it should be fun watching the racing from up close - a NZer is the defending champion and overall NZ will be expecting to do well. Please contact Derek Snow on 445 2061 or 021 903 243 and let him know what days you are available. There should be no problems taking a child with you.

2006 Sir Peter Blake Regatta, Torbay 9-10 December

The SPBR was a great event with about 420 boats entered. Wakatere was well represented in the Opti Class with Chris Steele taking out the championship from Logan Dunning-Beck, well clear of  the rest of the fleet. Finn Drummond sailed well to finish 6th in the P Class while over on the 420 course, Mike Snow-Hansen sailed consistently for 4th. Full results at http://www.torbaysailingclub.org.nz/

2006 NI Opti Champs, Lake Taupo 18 - 19 November

Logan Dunning-Beck has convincingly won the NI Opti Champs from Declan Burns (Queen Charlotte Yacht Club) and Alexandra Maloney (Kerrikeri/MBSC) and Chris Steele. We understand that the conditions were quite breezy but very shifty. There was more good news for Wakatere sailors with Alex Munroe winning the Green Fleet. Congratulations to all.

Wakatere had two teams competing at the Teams Racing Trials. Ray Steele reports...

A good turnout of 13 teams for the always fun teams racing event at MBSC. The entrants were seeded into two divisions of gold and silver fleet for the morning round robin, with the winner of the silver fleet going up to the gold fleet for the second round. The courses were laid close to shore with the early offshore breeze staying consistently 4-6 knots allowing for quick 10 minute races. Wakatere entered two teams including Chris Steele, Logan Dunning-Beck, Simon Swinton & Nick Croft in team 1, and Jack Collinson, Nathan Long, Alex Munro & James Roberts in team 2.

Intergalactic Roto-Vegas OK Dinghy Championship 2006, Rotorua 7 - 8 Oct

The first regatta of the 2006-7 OK Dinghy Summer Series took place at Rotorua over the weekend of October 7th and 8th. Fourteen OK Dinghy sailors made the trip to the smelly centre of New Zealand along with the yachts from the organizing body, the Bay of Plenty Trailer Yacht Association. Many thanks again to them, for organizing this weekend.
It was great to see some new faces on the circuit, notably Andrew Pardington, Mark Orams and Scott Beavis from Auckland, local sailor Rob Longston, and, making a return after a 17 year absence, not only from the class but also from sailing, Glen Berry. It is also worth noting that nine of the sailors came from Auckland.
The racing itself was a rather confusing affair, with only 4 boats managing to keep all their results in the single figures. As can be seen from the results, most people produced a random set of results, caused mainly by the random shifts and breeze lines. Needless to say, without going into too much detail, it was possible to take 10 places on the run if you sat in the right breeze line. Likewise it was also possible to lose 10 places on a beat it you found yourself on the wrong side of a 120 degree wind bend. And I kid you not, one shift was that big.
Overall, it was a closer run thing between Mark Perrow of Wakatere and Steve McDowell of Worser Bay, separated only after a count-back.; Perrow again taking out the title he won last year. Count backs also decided 4th and 5th place and 6th and 7th place.
The next regatta in the 2006-7 Summer Series takes place at Takapuna, October 28/29.

Govenor's Cup Match Racing

Garth Ellingham has been sailing in the Govenor's Cup youth match racing cup in USA. Garth is in the RNZYS team that finished third overall. Here's an excerpt from a report on the host yacht club site:

On Friday, July 21, Balboa Yacht Club won their first match in the Second Round Robin against the undefeated Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club team, but then King Harbor Yacht Club beat both BYC and RPAYC to knock them out of the semi-finals. In their fleet, which included half of the teams entered, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia lost to RPAYC but was victorious over all of the other teams, so will join KHYC in the semi-finals.

King Harbor is the only US team that made it to the semi-finals, where they will meet Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Royal Perth Yacht Club. The semi-finals and finals will be completed today, Saturday, July 22. The remaining eight teams will compete in fleet races in another part of the race course.

The weather and racing conditions have been outstanding this week. Newport Beach is usually not so warm, and has lighter winds than we have been lucky enough to have this week. The winds have ranged from five to eighteen knots, providing some excellent racing experiences.

The strong winds yesterday gave the teams some problems with their spinnakers. Spectators watched from a variety of boats as the spinnakers coming up often wrapped into colorful figure eights, or dragged in the water a bit on their way down. One of the most beautiful sights occurred when those boats that had completed their races for the day started back to Balboa Yacht Club with spinnakers flying, since the wind was from the west. Often two of the teams would make another race of the return, testing their skills against each other.

Harbour & Racing Events Buoys

From the Harbourmaster

"The Harbourmaster has secured funding from the ARC Coastal Funding Committee for the placement of racing buoys in the Waitemata Harbour.  Boating clubs and the Auckland Yacht and Boating Association are working with the Harbourmaster to position these marks to give the best positions for racing and to ensure minimum impact on vessels navigating within the channel.  We hope to have 11 buoys in total, with the first seven being placed and ready for use by the new racing season.  We are looking for sponsorship funding to pay for and maintain these buoys; sponsors will be able to display their name and logo on the buoy.  Please contact the Harbourmaster's Office if you would like to be part of this unique opportunity.

"The Harbourmaster's Office has also secured funding to hold a supply of 12 inflatable markers and anchoring equipment.  These yellow marks will range in size from 1.3 x 0.5 metres, to 1.7 x 1.7 metres.  We plan to make these available to any group holding an event on the water next summer".

Click here to view the map. We are told that the Yellow buoys are to be laid as permanent yacht racing marks for use mainly by the keel boat clubs and all the channel marks are being relocated.
