2006 Opti Nationals, Torbay Easter 2006 (updated)
This year 180 boats competed in the Open Fleet of the Optimist Nationals at Torbay over Easter.
The Wakatere sailors who competed in the open fleet were Chris, Logan, Finn, Simon, Nick, Hardy, Alice, Jack, Stewart, Isobel, Lucy and Ian.
Conditions ranged from very light through to 18knot NE with a good swell on the following days. Day 1 favoured the lighter sailors and Logan placed 3rd and 1st. Day 2 was much windier with some top 10 placings from Finn, Chris and Simon.
Day 3 produced a scorcher for Chris, winning 4 from 4 races, an absolutely fantastic result, He even managed a smile when he came ashore. Logan also had 4 top 10 placings, Finn was placed in the top 20. At this stage points were very close and any of the top 10 sailors could have won the regatta.
Days 4 and 5 were slightly lighter but with a large swell, creating difficult conditions for some of the sailors. However, Waketere sailors, Finn, Logan, Chris and Simon all featured with top 10 placings.
The best placed Wakatere sailors were:
Chris Steele 2nd
Logan Dunning Beck 7th
Finn Drummond 14th
Simon Swinton 19th
Nick Croft 40th
Nick also received the prize for the best placed competitor at their first nationals and Stewart received the trophy for finishing in the median position.
Green Fleet Report
There was a great showing from Waketere in the green fleet, with Jodi, Florence, Kate, Adam, Henry, Alex, Nick, James and Hamish competing. For some of these sailors it was their first big regatta, so they did really well to be out there in all conditions over 7 races!
There were over 50 boats in the fleet and everyone learned a lot about starting with so many boats on the line not to mention the busy mark roundings. On the windier days with the short steep chop on the green fleet course the sailors were really challenged and suffered a few capsizes. They should al be very proud of their efforts.
Final placings saw Hamish 1st with James 14th and Kate was best placed girl, finishing 17th.

Dirty Dog and Auckland Champs, Eastern Beach 18 & 19 March
Hamish Beck leading a race on Saturday
James Roberts coming in for the finish
Open fleet
On the 11th and 12th March a good number of Wakatere Opti sailors competed in the Auckland Champs held off Eastern Beach. The first day (incorporating The Dirty Dog Regatta), saw light , shifty winds 5 – 12 knots. The third race was a crazy one with the wind dying as the leaders rounded the bottom mark. The next 5 minutes saw up to 90 boats sail past them as the wind filled in from the right. Logan was the best placed Wakatere sailor at 5th in The Dirty Dog.
On the 2nd day, winds ranged from 12 to 19 knots with courses set further off shore. The starts were hectic in choppy water and there were lots of general recalls. Chris placed 8th overall, the best Wakatere result.
In the Green Fleet it was a chance for many of our young sailors to sail their first regatta at The Dirty Dog. Well done to Jodi, Bennett and Thomo, Henry, Kirsten, and Ashleigh.Hamish, James and Henry sailed again on Sunday to complete the Auckland Champs with Hamish finishing in 3rd place overall.

In the last race of the day Wakatere sailors were 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th and 6th at the first mark and Wakatere sailors finished 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th
Green Fleet was even better cause Andrew Ranford won it !! and Hamish was 4th out of about 20 sailors. In race 3 Hamish led all the way to the first mark.

Bucklands Beach Centreboard Regatta, Eastern Beach 11th February
In light conditions Wakatere sailors did well in the Opti Open fleet. Logan Beck placed 1, Simon Swinton 3, and Chris Steele 4. Stewart Dodson did well to finish in the middle of the fleet. At the prizegiving, with only three results counted, Wakatere did even better with Simon 1, Logan 2, and Chris 3. In the green fleet Liam Coleman did well to finish 12 in his first regatta.

Wakatere's Opti sailors showed their continuing rise through up the ranks with Logan Beck comfortably winning the Anniversary Regatta with club mates Chris Steele in 4th and Simon Swinton in 10th. And, Logan's brother Hamish placed 4th in the green fleet to show that there's more to come.
Sunburst NI Championships, Taupo 21 - 22 January
The regatta sponsored by Leader was conducted under the auspices of Lake Taupo Yacht Club and sailed in conjunction with the Phase 2 class National Champs. The overall control was excellently managed by Peter Roberts, Rear Commodore of LTYC. Because the Phase 2 contest was a national event, it required an accredited National Race Officer and Alison Shearer of Tauranga officiated with both fleets, assisted by husband Rusty, Peter Nankivell and other able volunteers from LTYC.
The Sunbursts attracted 22 entries from clubs as diverse as Worser Bay, Kapiti, Lake Taupo, Mercury Bay, Wakatere and a very welcome participating crew from Rarotonga, who borrowed a boat kindly loaned by Nigel Price. Participants began arriving on Friday afternoon.
There had been overnight rain, some reasonable heavy but Saturday dawned fine.
Race 1 start was delayed while the light wind settled and the RO became satisfied with the positioning of the marks. During the race there were some substantial wind shifts and fairly constant shuffling of positions. Rhythmandswing (Brett and Alice Linton) emerged as the winner, followed by Embers (Greg and Finn Wright), Black Magic (Hartley and Bailey Atkinson), Rose Ann (Malcolm and Emily Tubby) and Cognos (James and Jordan Corbett) ...click here for more

2006 Starling Nationals, New Plymouth 4 - 7 January
Mike Snow-Hansen finished the Nationals in style with placings of 8, 1 & 2 to place 4th overall. Jeremy Dey had a similarly good day in the Silver fleets with two victories. Peter Burling easily won overall from fellow Tauranga club member Bruce Kennedy and Chris Dawson from Murrays Bay. Results at http://www.npyc.org.nz/

The second day's racing was held in demanding conditions with 15 to 20 knots of wind and large seas. Two races were held to determine places in the gold and silver fleets and another two races held in those fleets, with racing finishing at 7pm. Once again the best performing Wakatere sailor was Mike Snow-Hansen who is now 8th overall. Matthew Knox, Jono Spurdle and Jeremy Dey all had good races in the silver fleet with Jono lying 7th overall. Three more races are scheduled for the final days racing. Peter Burling from Tauranga has won every race except one and is likely to retain his title.
Racing finally got underway on the scheduled second day of competition. The previous day's 25 knots had moderated to 8 to 12 knots while the swell remained at about 3m. The conditions were very difficult with the best results coming from Mike Snow-Hansen who is currently fourth overall. Andrew Knox had the misfortune to have a side stay come adrift in race 2, resulting in his mast base breaking off. A quick repair at lunchtime saw him on the start line for race 3. The wind in race 3 built stadily to 20 knots with huge 5m swells. Andrew had the race of his life being placed third with only a short beat to the finish. Unfortunately a 30 knot squall came through during which time his mast broke in two.
However, it transpired that all the sailors in that fleet with the exception of 4 had sailed the incorrect course so were awarded a DNF.
2005-6 Tauranga Cup, New Plymouth 30 December - 2 January
Races 8 & 9 were not sailed leaving the final placings Carl, Paul, and Daniel. Sussanah Pyatt was first girl.
Races 5, 6 & 7. It was more of the same as Carll continued to dominate racing. His three firsts means he cannot be beaten for first while Paul's three seconds means he cannot be beaten for second. Third place will be between Daniel Willcox and Susannah Pyatt although the forecast is looking marginal for the last two races.
Races 2, 3 & 4. Carl relished the stronger winds to wind all three races convincingly. Paul placed second in the first race followed by two thirds behind Daniel Willcox.
Race 1. Conditions were similar to the Tanner Cup which seemed to play into the hands of the top three placegetters from that regatta. Paul lead most of the way round the course only to be passed by Carl half way up the last beat. Travis Dow finished in a close third.

2005-6 Tanner Cup, New Plymouth 27 - 29 December
Races 5 & 6. The final day's racing was an exciting affair with many lead changes. In race 5, Travis Dow from Northland won by a few metres from Paul with Carl back in 4th. Paul protested Travis over an incident early in the race. Race 6 was equally exciting with Paul winning from Jonno Hanns (Wellington) and Carl. Jonno was over the line at the start promoting Carl to second. This meant that Carl would be the Tanner Cup winner unless Paul's protest against Travis was successful. The protest was dismissed meaning that Carl was crowned this year's Tanner Cup winner from Paul and Travis Dow.
Races 2, 3 & 4. Racing started mid-afternoon to allow the wind to build. Carl showed superior speed in the 5 to 8 knot winds to win all three races comfortably and only needs to prevent Paul from winning both remaining races to take out the contest. Paul placed 2, 2 & 3. The forecast is for similar winds.
Race 1. Race 1 was held in an increasing wind (up to about 20 knots) with a 3m high swell making things difficult for the competitors. Carl Evans representing Auckland had the legs on the fleet upwind but Paul Snow-Hansen (North Harbour) gained on the downwind legs. Paul surged into the lead on the penultimate leg only to drop back to second after capsizing while gybing. Carl then hit the last mark and had to complete a 360 degree penalty turn allowing Paul to sail into the lead which he held until the finish. Jason Saunders of Bay of Plenty finished third behind Carl.

2005 Wakatere Junior & Youth Regatta, 17 December
The weather for the Wakatere Junior & Youth Regatta was a mixed bag, starting off as a moderate, rainy & cold easterly before moving around towards the south and clearing up and dropping. There were a number of good results from Wakatere sailors, especially in the Opti Green Fleet where Anrew Ranford finished second closely followed by Isabel Hawkins, James Roberts, Nathan Long, Hamish Beck and Billy White. Congratulations to the winners, Ben Caundle from Ngaroto (Opti Green), Marcus Hansen from Whangarei (Opti Open), Carl Evans from Kohi (P Class) and Michael Langley from Howick (Starlings). 2005 Sir Peter Blake Memorial Regatta, Torbay 10-11 December
The Sir Peter Blake Memorial Regatta was a great celebration of centreboard sailing with 300 entrants spread across a variety of classes. On Saturday the wind was a very variable nor westerly, both in strength and direction. The wind on Sunday was a more steady and slightly stronger northerly.
Best result from a Wakatere sailor came from the venerable Grant Beck who cleaned up the Hobies. He will be doubly pleased as the Wakatere Opti sailors who he is coaching performed exceptionally well. Logan Beck had his best result at this level of competition finishing third followed by Finn Drummond (8), Chris Steele (12) and Simon Swinton 16. In the Green Fleet, Isobel Hawkins sailed into a solid 9th place. Special mention should be made of James Roberts who finished 27th out of 44 in his first ever regatta, including a 4th in one race.

2005 OK Dinghy Nationals, Wakatere 8 - 10 DecemberDAY 3. In a great result for the Wakatere contingent, Mark Perrow secured the OK Nationals from club mate Alistair Deaves. Russell Wood, Ben Morrison and Mike Wilde also featured in the top ten.
The final day of the New Zealand OK Dinghy Nationals brought slightly stronger winds than the previous two days. Although less shifty, there were many large holes which saw some competitors lose many places on some legs.
Going into the final three races, Mark Perrow had a relatively safe margin on second place Alistair Deaves. They both had bad first races, finishing ninth and 11th respectively, leaving Perrow only to get an eighth in Race 9 to clinch the title with a race to spare for his first time. Deaves then had to sail two good races to hold off a late charge by the Worser Bay sailors. This he did with a second and a fifth, securing second overall. DAY 2. Conditions were similar for day 2 with Mark Perrow stamping his authority on the contest with two wins followed by two second placings. Alistair Deaves was the only sailor who stayed anywhere near Mark with two wins in the last two races of the day. The final three races are scheduled for tomorrow.DAY 1. It was a tough days racing on the Hauraki Gulf for the first three races of the 2006 OK Dinghy Nationals, 5-15 knot winds and 35 to 55 deg shifts made for testing conditions.
Mark Perrow from Wakatere Boating club came off best with two wins and a fourth to lead the series. Chasing hard are other pre regatta favourites Alistair Deaves (winner of race 3) and Greg Wilcox who are second and third respectively.
Perrow described his racing as "a glamour days sailing" although the pressure will come on him tomorrow. With four more scheduled races on Friday and ten in total there is still anyone in the top ten with a chance of taking out the 2006 nationals.
The forecast for Friday is for up to 20 knots which could favour some of the bigger boys who struggled in the light shifty conditions of today.
Last year the Worser Bay sailors dominated the event by taking out the top three places. Everyone will be watching to see if the Wakatere boys can turn the tables this year.

2005 Fist Full of Dollars Regatta, Torbay 29 May
A good number of Wakatere Opti and Starling sailors attended the Torbay Fist Full of Dollars regatta, despite the forecasted strong winds. There was a period of 25 knot winds but generally they weren't too bad. Top Wakatere results came from Mike & Paul Snow-Hansen, winning the Starling and Opti classes. Mike scored two wins, a second and a third in his first sail back in a Starling since the Anniversary Regatta (he's broken the mast on his 420). Alice Hawkins again showed her ability in the stronger winds to be the second placed girl in the Opti fleet.
It was great to see the close racing between Lucy Hakins, Emily Tubby and George Tubby with all three finishing on equal points. Next regatta is the Kohi Regatta on 19 June.
2005 Closing Day Regatta
A good fleet competed in the Closing Day Regatta held in great sailing conditions. The Optimist teams to the Worlds and Asean Champs put in an appearance and demonstrated the close racing that has sent NZ Optimist sailing to the top of the world. Another highlight was the appearance of dolphins at the start of the racing. The Clsoing Day trophies are awarded on the first race of the day. Paul Snow-Hansen continued his run of form to take out the Opti Nationals. Paul won 7 races and did not have to sail the last two.
The event was held over a range of conditions, from 15 to 20 knots with big seas to light to moderate. The temperature was warm, dolphins played amongst the fleet and the sailing was great. 193 sailors were entered in the Open Fleet and 43 in the Green. Wakatere provided 11 sailors in the open fleet and 5 in the green.
The Wakatere sailors performed well - Finn Drummond finished 22nd with 3 top 10 finishes (including a third), Logan Beck had two top 10 places including one where he surprised himself by leading Dan Willcox and Paul for much of the race, Simon Swinton improved through the series to post 2 top 10 places, Chris Steele also improved securing an 8th in one race, Andrew McQueen sailed consistently, Alice Hawkins handled the heavy wind day with ease and George Tubby finished all the races. Matthew McQueen, Emily Tubby and Sam Reeves all learnt lots in their first Nationals.

2005 Wakatere Senior Regatta 27 Feb
9AM looked like it could be One of those Hot Balmy Bays Summers Days. No, said our wise and knowledgeable Race Officer &endash; Don Brook, it will build to a good Nor/Nor Wester by lunch time. And it did just that. Gentle breeze through for race 1 at 11AM and then the treat for races two three and four. A gusty 12-18 knot Nor/Nor Wester provided an excellent challenge to all competitors. The younger younger seniors, lead by Garth Ellingham did an excellent job supporting Don and on the support boats. Well done Guys, and we look forward to your involvement again next year. The javelins looked great and enjoyed the conditions. Thanks for coming over guys and we look forward to seeing more of you next year. Will somebody tell the flag officers that it is not compulsory for them to capsize!!! -M.T.

2005 North Harbour Champs. Torbay 26 Feb
One of those Hot Balmy Bays Summers Days. Ideal for Picnics on the Beach and Water skiing to Little Barrier. First Start got underway at 12:30 and three races in light shifty conditions were completed. Wade had a good day in the Starling, finishing just outside the Medals. Nick Croft enjoyed his first Opti Open Fleet Regatta. A good choice of Regatta to cut his teeth on. Future Support Boats don't confuse the rocky outcrop to the left of the Island with a pod of friendly dolphins! - M.T.

2005 Auckland Boys Champs, Murrays Bay 19 Feb
There were a number of good performances from Wakatere sailors at the Boys Champs. Paul Snow-Hansen placed second overall in the Optis after a navigation error (heading for the wrong mark) lost him the title. Wade Gatfield struggled in the first race of the Starlings with a leaking boat but got things together in the afternoon to finish with a 3rd and a 2nd, placing 9th overall. Unfortunately the Starlings only had 3 races which meant Wade was unable to drop his first race. Jeremy Dey also had a good regatta with placings of 11. 7 & 6 to finish 7th in the overall standings.
Nicolas Croft sailed well in the Opti Green fleet to finish 4th overall with club members Sam Reeves, Stewart Dodson & Edward Reeves not too far behind. Results at http://murraysbay.org/regattas.htm
2005 Waikato Champs, Whitianga
The Tubby family dominated the Waikato Opti Champs with George winning three races to take the title from sister Emily. Congratulations George & Emily.
2005 Eastern Beach Regatta
After a terrible night's weather, Saturday produced a good day's sailing in strong gusty off shore winds. Best performances from Wkatere sailors came from Andrew Knox who sailed well to place second in the Starlings. An unfortunate capsize in the final race followed by a broken hiking strap probably cost Andrew first place. Paul Snow-Hansen was second in the Opti Open on countback while Logan Beck made a brief appearance to win one of the green fleet races. Results at http://www.bbyc.org.nz/results/series/EBNc.htm
2005 Sail Auckland Regatta
A number of Optis attended Sail Auckland. Conditions on Saturday were very windy and congratulations go to all the sailors who managed to finish. While the forecast on Sunday was for more of the same, the wind and seas moderated and proved to be great sailing conditions.
Paul Snow-Hansen placed 2nd in the Opti Open fleet. Finn Drummond continued his improvement, especially in the heavier conditions where he placed 8th in race 1 and held 4th for most of the 2nd race. George Tubby and Nicholas Croft sailed really well in the green fleet, finishing 6th and 7th. George placed 2nd in the windiest race and Nicholas had three third placings on Sunday. Results are at http://www.sailauckland.org.nz/results.htm#2005

Both Paul and Chris sailed well with Paul winning and Chris coming 13th. Full rersults at http://taipaoptiregatta2005.redanonline.biz/results.htm . 2005 Starling Nationals, Tauranga
Day 4. After complete calm in the morning, the wind rose to about 15-20 knots for the start of the first race of the day. By the end of the race the wind had risen to near 30 knots and further racing was called off. Best performance of the day came from Derek Snow who was placed 6th. Day 3. Only two races were held today, in about 20 knots of wind. Kate produced a pair of good results, 6th and 2nd to move into equal third with Paul who had a third and a drop. The scheduled third race was postponed until tomorrow in an attempt to avoid the strongest tide flows.

2004 NI Opti Champs, 20-21 November
The Wakatere Opti fleet had a good time at the NI's in Taupo. Paul Snow-Hansen finished 2nd - congratulations. There were some impressive results from the other twelve sailors in the Wakatere fleet also. Here's a report from Christine Hansen.
A record 191 sailors competed in the 2004 North Island Optimist Champs - 122 in the Open fleet and 69 in the Green fleet. Competitors from all over the North and South Island converged to take part in the two day regatta hosted by Lake TaupoYC and organised by NZIODA. Six out of a possible seven races were completed in light to moderate winds, a small chop was present most of the time and the wind fluctuated in strength during races with the odd hole appearing, but overall the conditions were very favourable for such a large event with a high percentage of relatively inexperienced sailors.
Saturday 20: Four races were sailed on the first day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, the fourth race was delayed after a significant wind shift during the starting sequence - sailors from the Open fleet returned to the beach well after 6pm. In the Open fleet Daniel Willcox sailed very consistently with an impressive three 2nd placings and a 1st. Paul Snow-Hansen, Carl Evans and Russell Hopper each had a 1st placing. In the Green fleet, 1st placings were shared between Joshua Smith, Jake Stanely Harris, Mathew McQueen (Wakatere) and Jordon McKenzie-Brown.
Sunday 21: The first race was scheduled for 9.30 am, but with no wind the postponement flag was flown until about 11am and the two races were held back to back. This was most fortunate for members of the 2004 World Optimist Team who, arriving back from an overnight trip to Auckland, literally jumped out of a mini bus, ran into the yacht club grounds, scrambled into their sailing clothes, hopped into their rigged boats and left the shore about 10 minutes after the flag came down. In the Open fleet Dan won the first race to clinch the series, Paul came back strongly with a 1st and 2nd to be placed 2nd overall and Carl Evans had a 5th which was enough to place him 3rd overall. In the Green fleet Matthew McQueen continued his good form to finish 3rd overall.

2004 Optimist Teams Racing, Murrays Bay 13 November
The annual Teams Racing Regatta is becoming a popular event on the Auckland Optimist calendar. This year Wakatere sent a team of Simon Swinton, Finn Drummond, Chris Steele, Andrew McQueen and Paul Snow-Hansen. The team had a great day, finishing the round robin undefeated and finally finishing third behind Murrays Bay and Glendowie. Next year we'll try and send more teams to this event.
2004 Season Points, 7 November
The biggest fleet of the year (60+ boats) sailed in warm sunny conditions. The Optimists had some great races with Simon Swinton winning the first and Anrew McQueen the second. Provisional Season Points results for the season are now available, click on 2005 Series Points.pdf
Note: the Opti Green Fleet competition runs until Xmas.
2004 NH Tanner Cup Trials, Wakatere 30-31 Oct, 6 Nov
Day 3. Four races were scheduled for Day 3 but the light sea breeze allowed only three races to be held. The spoils were evenly shared between Paul Snow-Hansen (1, 2, 2), Kate Ellingham (3, 1, 3) and Dan Willcox (2, 3, 1). However, by the end of the day's racing, Paul was in the position where he did not need to race the last 2 races and was therefore declared the winner of the trials. The final 2 races will not be sailed. Final result: Paul Snow-Hansen (Wakatere) 1, Kate Ellingham (Wakatere) 2, Dan Willcox (Murrays Bay) 3.
Day 2. The winds on day 2 were completely different to the previous day with little wind for most of the day. After a delayed start, the first race was aborted when the wind shifted significantly on the first beat. Paul Snow-Hansen led from the restart to win convincingly from Dan Willcox and Kate Ellingham, the latter two swapping positions throughout the race. Paul now sits on 7 points with Kate on 9 and Jessica Burrell, who has sailed consistently, on 21. Four races are now scheduled for Saturday with 1 on Sunday. One race can be dropped after 5 races and two after 8.
Day 1. The first day of the NH Tanner Cup Trials was held in 15 to 25 knot winds. 24 sailors were entered with 22 facing the starter for the first race. Race 1 featured an all the way win for Paul Snow-Hansen from Daniel Willcox and Kate Ellingham. Kate did the same in the second race, winning from Susannah Pyatt and Jessica Burrell. Paul and Kate swapped the lead in the third race with Paul just winning from Kate with Susannah 3rd. Overall the two Wakatere sailors lead the regatta on 6 points from Susannah on 9.

2004 P & Starling North Island Champs, Tauranga 24 Oct
Paul Snow-Hansen is the new NI P Class Champ. Going into the last race, Kate Ellingham held a one point lead over Paul and Dan Willcox. Paul won the decisive race from Dan with Kate 4th meaning that Paul won the contest by one point from Dan with Kate a further point back. With the top three places going to North Harbour sailors, next week's Tanner Cup Trials to be held at Wakatere will be keenly contested.
The Starling class was dominated by two Tauranga sailors, Bruce Kennedy winning from Peter Burling with Scott Illingworth from Torbay third. Best Wakatere performances came from Garth Ellingham 8th, Mike Snow-Hansen 19th and Jake Lawrence 25th.
Racing was held in light conditions with the tide patterns being a significant factor. There were 90 entries in the Starlings and 77 in the P Class. For full results click on http://www.yacht.org.nz//results/Presults.html for Ps and http://www.yacht.org.nz//results/Sresults.html for Starlings.
2004 Season Points Races 5 & 6, 17 Oct
For the first time this season, racing was held in sunny moderate north easterly winds - a pleasant change from previous weeks. About 55 boats were on the water for afternoon racing including a large number of Optis, both in the Open & Green fleets. Winners of two races included Finn Drummond (Optis), Kate Ellingham (P Class), Garth Ellingham (Starlings), James Corbett (Sunburst), Mark Perrow (OKs) & Derek Snow (3.7s).
2004 Manly Junior & Youth Regatta, Manly 16 October
Four Wakatere sailors attended the Manly regatta and all except one placed third, George Tubby in the Opti Greens (winning the last race), Jake Lawrence in the Starlings and Paul Snow-Hansen in the P Class. The last race was held in wins gusting to 30 knots so the performance of all these sailors deserves "full credit". The same cannot be said for the fourth member of the Wakatere contingent, Derek Snow who let the side down, placing 4th in the Starlings.
Junior Sailing Ethics
"You haven't won the race if, in winning the race, you have lost the respect of your competitors.".....Paul Elvström (Four-time Olympic gold medallist)The Yachting NZ Junior & Youth Committee has produced a number of Guidelines for Ethics in Sailing. Go to the Coaching link to view them.
2004 Season Points Races 3 & 4, 10 Oct
The second club sailing day once again saw strong gusty winds, this time from the north west. There were large shifts available meaning nobody was ever out of contention. About 50 boats faced the starter for the first race of the day.
Full results are not available but the Optis had good close racing with Andrew McQueen winning the first race from Finn Drummond and Chris Steele. Finn won the second race with Chris second and Alice Hawkins third. James Corbett won both races in the Sunbursts as did Chris Hawkins in the 3.7s. The Starling spoils were shared between Jake Lawrence and Mike Snow-Hansen and the Ps between Paul Snow-Hansen & Kate Ellingham.
2004 Fist Full of Dollars Regatta, Torbay 9 Oct
A good contingent of Wakatere sailors attended the season's first Fist Full of Dollars Regatta at Torbay. The day started with a light Nor'East breeze. After lunch the breeze swung through to the Nor'West and freshened, with gusts up to 15 knots with heavy showers.
Best results from Wakatere came from Paul Snow-Hansen (first in Ps), Garth Ellingham (2nd in Starlings), Jono Spurdle and Sophie Rzpecky (2nd & 3rd in Starling Green Fleet), Matthew McQueen and Luke Yarnton (3rd & 4th in Opti Green Fleet) and Mike Snow-Hansen who had race placings of 1, 2 & 3. Mention must also be made of Andrew McQueen who performed consistently to finish a highly meritorious 13th in the Opti Open Fleet.

2004 Opening Day 3 Oct
The 2004-2005 season got underway with a few hardy souls venturing out into a blustery easterly wind. A forecast of 35-40 knots put some sailors off but thankfully the conditions were nowhere near that bad. Provisional winners were:
Optimists Finn Drummond
P Class Kate Ellingham
Starling Jake Lawrence
Sunburst James Corbett
Laser Greg Watkins2004 Winter Champs, Murrays Bay 24-26 Sept
The 2004 Winter Champs were held in strong gusty winds. The turn out was the largest yet with fleets of 40 to 50 boats in the Optis, Ps and Starlings.
The strongest Wakatere performances came in the P Class where Kate Ellingham was in a battle for the lead, finishing one point behind Rowan Swanson and one ahead of Josh Junior, both from Worser Bay. Paul Snow-Hansen placed 4th in the same class, a position matched by Matthew McQueen in the Opti Green fleet.
Other good performances came from Mike Snow-Hansen, 9th in the very competitive Starling fleet, Andrew McQueen in the Opti Open fleet and Emily and George Tubby in the Opti Green fleet. Emily and George improved throughout the regatta and are looking forward to the Fistfull of Dollars regatta at Torbay in two weeks time.

The difference this year was that Paul won with 3 wins, Kate winning the other race.
Matthew McQueen sailed really well to finish 3rd in the Opti Greens. Full results at http://murraysbay.org/regattas.htm
