Sunday 21st February was the annual club picnic which this year was different as we invited our friends from Devonport Yacht Club to supply the boats whilst Wakatere supplied bags of fun.

With an outstanding turnout of fast and graceful keelboats, we  raced off to Castor Bay (having been warned off Rangitoto's wasp-infestation).

Not your usual Narrow Neck beach Sunday morning sight, we welcomed our transport for the day and quickly teamed up for the race.

Simple rules with the promise of lunch, games and prizes meant we set off in earnest. With little wind behind us, spinnakers unfurled and we made our way to Castor Bay.

Junior Sail Auckland 13th - 14th Feb Kohi PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mindgames

Junior Sail Auckland is one of the biggest regattas of the season for Opti sailors and is sailed off Kohimarama Yacht Club the week after Sail Auckland, which is a grade 1 ISAF world ranking regatta for Olympic and other senior classes.

There were 120 entries in the Opti open fleet and 53 in the Opti Green fleet. Wakatere had 13 sailors in the Open fleet and 6 in the Green fleet.

On Saturday the westerly wind freshened to 20-30 knots, which was fairly challenging for a lot of sailors, but on Sunday the breezes were variable.

As always Kohi offered us a challenging chop and tidal flow, which is why we travel to regattas, to learn to sail in a variety of conditions.

We were lucky enough to have Susannah Pyatt coaching the Open fleet sailors, and she ran a really informative briefing for all of the sailors at 9:30 each morning and checked that the boats were set up correctly.

Congratulations to:

Jonathon Weston with a 2nd place in the Green fleet .

Marcus Somerville with a 4th and Jack Simpson 8th in the Open fleet.

Maddie Brogan with a 30th in open fleet being the first Wakatere girl in Open ( Girls note: the regatta was won by Olivia Mackay in style).

Harry Elworthy, coming from Green last spring and getting a very creditable 60th place, almost half way up the fleet!

Joseph Gibb-Pearson 11th in Green going hard in the breezy races.

Scott Macky 2nd place in the last race in Green.

Jessica Berry - First Green Fleet regatta.

for me it was one of those regattas which showed that determination and a never say die attitude will give you results - both in the heavy airs and the light airs.

Wakatere showed the way with huge parental support, great team work in getting all the boats to Kohi ( still need to recruit a driver for the big trailer), getting the sailors prepared and having fun - thanks to all of the parents who willingly gave up their weekend to be there in support. There were ample support boats to support the sailors...its good to see a familiar face at the end of a long windy race.

Highlights:

Taking a few RIB's in convoy across to Kohi was a fun start to the Saturday morning for some of the sailors ( and their parents).

Mike Simpson teaching the sailors about the importance of drinking water and proper food  - ask him about baked beans!?

Figuring out how to get across a startline with 120 boats on it! ( NB: there is no wind in the middle in row 4)

Susannah offering chocolate bars in exchange for OCS ( Bribe to get everyone on the start line).

Marcus's maveric tactical ability to pick shifts and wind pressure to make up 40 places in a race.

Izzy Hawkins winning a TV at the spot prizes.

Big smiles on everyone faces after a long weekend!!

BMW Oracle winning the Americas cup ( who stayed up?).

Well done to everyone, and especially thanks Mike Simpson for the Organisational genuis!

P nats this year were held in lyttelton Christchurch, and the regatta was, in a few words “freezing and hard work, but awesome fun and a great regatta”.

Day 10 - final race day

Well it was the last day of racing today - they managed to get 4 races in. Markus had a couple of good ones, and one really bad one! Nevermind. Check out the RESULTS- click on the "overall open" tab.   http://sailing.org.my/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=22&Itemid=33

They broke the age groups into "under 12" (though a lot of the kids in that group are 12 so I'm confused). Then they put all the others as being "under 15". So there is a couple of other pages of results - for the ages, and for the girl/boy results.   Anyway, Markus ended up 29th overall, and top Kiwi - his goal was to be in the top 50.   My goal - was for him to beat the Aussies!! Yay, he did.

Kiwi results are:

29th     Markus Somerville - best race was 3rd
49th     Liam Closey
53rd     William Linkhorn
60th     Michael Hayton
87th     Ellie Copeland - best race was 9th, 28th place overall for Girls
90th     Jamie Middleton
93rd     Liam Banks

Congratulations to Ellie for achieving 28th place for Girls and to both Ellie & Markus for representing New Zealand and Wakatere - tremendous achievements.

Congrats to Markus (1st), Jack (3rd), Maddie (7th), Tim (8th), Max (10th). Five Wakatere sailors in the top 10!

phoca_thumb_l_dsc_0071.jpg

With a total fleet of 41 sailors it was impressive to see more than a third of those sailing from Wakatere (15 - Markus, Jack, Maddie, Tim, Max, Sam W, Alan, Harry, Sam B, Rory, Scott, Sebastian, Harrison, Dan, Jordan). All sailors sailed the same course with no differentiation between open and green fleet - all credit therefore to our "green & not so green" greenies who threatened some excellent open sailors, especially Max who managed 10th place.

Markus & Tim also won 1st & 2nd place for the North Harbour Intermediate Optimist Championship.
