Starling Winter Champs 2009 |
|
|
|
|
Chris outsailed everyone to comfortably win the 2009 Winter Champs from World Splash Champion Declan Burn with Logan a very close third. The standard of the fleet was high and a number of others pushed these guys hard all the way in winds that averaged around 18kns for the three days. Being early in the season most of the sailors no doubt found the going tough physically and their rustiness accounted for the number of capsized that were observed.
James had some great races including a 2nd and one were he started last and past more than half the fleet of nearly 50 sailors. Matthew sailed consistently, managing to finish in the top 20 in every race, although two were lost with an OCS and a Z flag. Mahia and Lucy both had some good races but found the stronger winds to be a little tough this early in the season.
1st Chris Steele (14pts), 2nd Declan Burn (24pts), 3rd Logan Dunning Beck (25pts), 16th James Roberts (137pts), 18th Matthew Kempkers (147pts), 26th Mahia Pepper (224 pts), 29th Lucy Hawkins (268pts).

Hi all starling sailors, Well done at the lake on Sat. As Peter said on the web site report everyone except Brad had at least 1 bad race. Its just a case of getting more consistant now. The Lake conditions are always very tricky.
The starlings Wednesday Coaching will start Sept 30th with Max. We will be starting at 4:30pm. So far we have Ben, James, Kelsey, Mahia, Mathew, Heather and Lauren signed up with Lucy when she can. Reminder to send or give me a cheque for $90 made out to Wakatere Sailing club for those who have yet to pay. This will cover Wed coaching for the rest of this year.
There are paid jobs available at the club to get boats out and ready on Sun morning. If you are interested talk to Amanda Michel, or send her an email. Ask James and Lucy its not that hard.
27th Sept is a whole club working bee. Its a chance to tidy out your locker. help arround the club with jobs that make the club run smoothly. All helpers will be appreciated. The more helpers the quicker it will be done.
Next regatta Winter Champs at Murrays Bay. Amanda has sent the NOR. This is also the first leg of the Starling Traveler Series.
All for now.

|
The 2009 Icebreaker was sailed on Sep 12th with 20 Starlings competing, of which four were from Wakatere. With wind of around 10-15kn from the NE conditions were great (apart from a few showers) and resulted in close racing. Almost everyone had a bad race apart from Brad Moss from Murrays Bay, who scored 1,1,2,2 to finish 15 points ahead of Logan.

With summer not too far off its time to wash off the dust and cobwebs from your Starling. Why not do it by sailing at Pupuke on Sunday afternoons?
Sun 6th Sep. Lovely spring sailing at the lake with 10 Starlings out, four from Wakatere. Chris won the first race with James in a photo finish for second. Mahia was close in 4th. Matthew just got it all wrong to finish 10th. In race 2 Mahia recovered from an average start to lead from the 1st mark. James sailed through the fleet on the first full beat moving up from 10th to 2nd! Chris sailed a safe race (ie: up the middle) for 3rd, while Matthew improved to come 7th.

James showing great speed for a couple of seconds
Sun 30th Aug, down to 9 Starlings with four from Wakatere, Logan, Mahia, Matthew and Chris. Both race were in under 10kn, much less than the 25kn that was forecast which probably put some off. Logan won both races from Mahia with Matthew having a 4th and 5th. Chris had a 6th in the first one and sailed a Splash in the second.
Sun 23rd there were 13 Starlings out, they just keep coming! Logan, James, Mahia and Matthew were there from Wakatere, with Mahia sailing a great first race to lead all the way. Logan won the second getting in front of James just before the finish. Just the two races were held as the wind was lighter and the longer course was sailed.

Logan (FRA01), Matthew (1153) and Mahia (right), Race 1 start
Sun 16th there were 11 keen Starlings out including the same four from Wakatere. Three short races were held and were over by around 4pm, so it was all good fun especially with some good rides down wind.
