Masonic Team Fun
Published 00:00 on 13 Mar 2018
The Wakatere Masonic Cup is one of our most popular race days. Over the last few years it has evolved into a team event with 5 teams from a mix of Junior and Senior classes. The opportunity to integrate junior and senior racing is a special feature at Wakatere and highlights our family culture. While there is an element of fun, racing is as competitive as ever.
A late coaching commitment for Andrew Brown meant he couldn't attend, resulting in a wild card that went to Commodore Simon Probert to complete our five team leaders for the 2018 Wakatere Masonic Cup.
Team Leaders Emma Sanderson, Mike Sanderson, Rod Davis, Andy Richards & Simon Probert were intoduced to the 75 entries (100 sailors) across all classes. Entries were split evenly into five teams ensuring the top five seeded competitors in a class were evenly distributed. Team leaders were given the opportunity to coach and discuss tactics with their team. With amazing sailing bios, they had plenty to pass on.
This year's course: start / finish off Wakatere. Opti Green and Bic - Rough Rock starboard; Opti Open - Rough Rock starboard, North Head Buoy port, Rough Rock port. All other classes - Rough Rock starboard, Torpedo Buoy port, Rough Rock port.
Conditions were challenging, wind 6 to 12 knts south east ahead of a delayed Cyclone Hola with a flood tide.
Classes were started individually under the expert direction of PRO Ian Darby and the normal high level of competition was enjoyed across all classes. The afternoon ended with a BBQ and lolly scramble, prizes for the winning team and a few spotties.
This year's results:
- 5th Team Emma Sanderson - 7.12 Avg points
- 4th Team Rod Davis - 5.92 Avg Points
- 3rd Team Simon Probert - 5.61 Avg Points
- 2nd Team Mike Sanderson - 4.916 Avg. Points
- 1st Team Andy Richards - 4.78 Avg Points
This means that Andy Richards is our 2018 Masonic Cup team leader winner. A repeat of last year! Congratulations to the whole team.
A huge thank you to our fantastic team leaders, PRO and Opti parent volunteers.
