As Wakatere enters the second season of the club's Sustainability programme, we are more determined to educate, develop and expand on our initiatives in 2019 -2020 and beyond. Here is the expanded list -
Environmental education and awareness programme in our junior coaching
Implement a 'Wakatere Enviro Sailor' award for junior sailors achieving a set list of sustainability goals
Share Wakatere goals on environmental thinking with our coaches
Encourage our juniors to share ideas they want to implement at the club
Establish an annual Environmental Award for a club member best supporting our sustainability & environmental practices
Introduce a range of club clothing made from fabrics produced out of recycled ocean plastics
Plan to install rain water catchment tanks under our club deck to minimize our water usage
Plan for future installment of solar panels to reduce our clubs electricity consumption
Involve community environmental groups to be part of our efforts
Publicize our Clean Regatta initiatives with members and the community
Competitors are reminded of the World Sailing RRS 55 covering the Disposal of Trash
Continue to educate club members on the waste stream in place
Continue to improve signage for waste bins to make it easy for members to make the correct choice
Require all food providers to supply produce without plastic where possible
Provide water refilling stations for large scale events
Stop selling plastic bottles in our kitchen/bar
Offer plant based compostable water bottles
Use compostable kitchen utensils and serve wear at the club
Look out for the 3 bin options at the club. Apart from food scraps, many products are now plant based (ie coffee cups, cutlery, plates, bowls) and can go in the compostable bin - check the label on every item before you bin it

Wakatere is registered with the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas programme and target our main regattas for certification.

Sailors for the Sea dovetails into our club Strategic Document - to maintain and develop the Club's physical environment and infrastructure and to create a strong sense of club consciousness, diversity, community and fun.
Following the 2018 Wakatere Junior Regatta and the 2019 NZ OK Dinghy National Championship, Wakatere was awarded a SILVER LEVEL Clean Seas Regatta Certification for both regattas. We bettered this for the subsequent 2019 OK Dinghy World Championship by receiving GOLD LEVEL.
